Guys I've been given the task of buying my Dad's birthday present and it's been agreed that we want to get him an in-car GPS unit. Personally I use my iPhone with either TomTom or Co-Pilot so know nothing about the absolute plethora of units out there on the market. Doing a search in Google doesn't really help that much either; there is just so much choice.

I really want to get him the best device possible for the money spent.

I would really appreciate any feedback on which is best for around the $200 mark.

Ease of use, speed to get a GPS fix, accuracy of maps, easy to read.

Make sure its a Garmin.

Then your dad can take advantage of all the free maps from NZ Open GPS Project, http://nzopengps.org/

DSE is selling a Garmin Nuvi 1260 for $199.

Cheers for that I thought that looked like a good one (1390). JB Hifi has it for $197 at the moment so will probably go for it.

I came to the same decision for my father in law.

I haven't used the updates yet but it's been a few years so I might look into it next time I'm over there.

By all accounts it's not that difficult to apply.
