My current router - a Linksys WAG120N is starting to play up and I have trouble configuring it, though (so far), it hasn't stopped my use of the Internet. I'm looking at purchasing a replacement and wondered if there are any recommended routers for Orcon? It has to work well in a confined space (the Linksys doesn't feel very warm so I don't think heat is the problem there).

So, any recommendations? It needs good wireless and at least a couple of ethernet ports. All responses gratefully received.

If you resign. They should supply you with a Netcomm NF4V. They use it for ADSL2/UFB/VDSL. It is an extremely good modem/router combo, tall but extremely slim.
Comes with Gb ethernet and Wireless N300.
Also does come with SIP ports as well.

Thanks, kiwikiwi. It's a tad expensive but a definite possibility.

NF4V is the device supplied by Orcon and the only one they support.

Is that for UFB as well?  I've still got the old Genius router (which is a bad excuse for a router!).

Orcon exchange a new "white Genius" for your old "black Genius".

NF4V is used for xDSL and Fibre. The old Black Genius hasn't been used for a long time now.

Might have to ask nicely if I can get a free upgrade to the NF4V (seeing as the black Genius never worked).  I'd rather use that (and be supported) than use the Juniper SRX I have at the moment (and be unsupported).

Well....we still have tens of thousands of Genius Blacks in service, we are just supplying only NF4Vs with new connections.

If you have a problem Black then call the team and I am sure they will get you sorted.

Bit of a hard sell really as there is no problem when used on a flat network (or rather a standard home network as it's been put to me before).

I have a multi subnetted network that sits downstream of the router.  I'll give it a go, but suspect I'll be "S.O.O.L" :)

Plus there is no guarantee that the NF4V fixes the issue (which I PM'ed you separately about).

Cheers

Below is the link to the White Genius details.

For some reason my black Genius modem was dropping connections and generally pissing me off. Anywho, after a few calls I was sent a new 'White' Genius modem and it performed one eight the speed and nothing the Orcon call centre did resolved the issue.
I have made several calls and today I actually got a call back!
I will now receive another modem shortly to see if that one has the same problem: Just wondering what you  guys think of all this mess?

Kind Regards

Hopefully the new device solves your issue.  With Orcon having (tens of) thousands of networking devices out there, one or two are sure to have issues and you may have just been unlucky.

However if the new device doesn't fix the issue, the only thing I can offer is that my immediate thought is that's a negotiation issue.
I had some issues a little while ago with a number of devices not negotiating speed/duplex correctly.  I found this out by looking at the interface statistics.  Once the interface speed and duplex options were set, the interface errors went away and speed increased dramatically.  This was even though both devices should have been able to negotiate the interface speed and duplex settings correctly.
Might not be your problem, but worth a check.

Also have you tried replacing any of the Ethernet cables?  There is bound to be at least one Ethernet cable between the device you're on and the device where the internet goes out the house.  I've had perfectly good cables that worked for years go bad on moving equipment around.

Depending on what your device is, you my have fun finding where to look for interface errors (if exposed at all).  But that is where I would start.

Anyway, apologies to sofistek for hijacking his/her thread.

Well as all other CPE's other than the ones supplied, are unsupported, I would say that Orcon recommend using the supplied device.

Well, I decided to get the NF4V but the quick set up didn't work. Had to call Orcon who said that they do supply a NetComm modem but not that model! Oh well, we got it to work eventually; looks like the only extra thing I had to do was disable the IGMP multicast proxy, which gets enabled through the quick setup. Shame they couldn't just give me the full settings, as I asked the first time I rang (but I didn't have the modem plugged in at that point). The guy I talked to claimed that they need to send some kind of signal to the new modem but I don't think they did anything like that the second time I called.

Still it's all up now.

You were told wrong :) But of course ours has custom firmware, and we auto-provision to make things easy for customers.  Internally we call it "Genius White".

I am however interested as to why you would go out and buy one rather than just re sign with us...
