I was driving last night, and got a phone call, so being a good citizen I let it divert to voicemail, and dialled in to check it when I was home again.

The system prompted me to go thru the "initial setup", create PIN etc.

Except, I've done this already - at least THREE times in less than 12 months (I only moved to 2Degrees towards end 2022).

Is this just me, or does this happen to other people too?

Does not happen to me but this issue happened with some customers when I worked for VodafoneNZ the issue was your VM box is on more than 1 VM platform

I am not sure how many VM servers 2d has but I suspect this could be your issue

The call's VM was there waiting for me, so at the end of the day, more annoying than anything else.

Is this worth raising a fault over, do you think, or is that just going to be an exercise in futility and frustration? (Somewhat hypothetical question, I know!)

As far as I understand it. 2degrees only keeps voicemail setting if you use voicemail every so often (I think possibly 3 months?). If voicemail isn't accessed in that time you personal settings are removed. I've given up at this point trying to keep my voicemail settings intact. I get voicemails so rarely that it's always reset by the time I need to check one.

It might be fixed now, but previously I'd set it up and then disable it using option 8 or whatever it was. Then a few months later I would find I had voicemail and calling to listen would be forced to set it all up again. To the point where I resorted to an alternative method to disable voicemail.

Ah - that could also explain it - it's also a "once in a blue moon" access for me too. Thanks....

I've emailed them about it - wonder how long it'll take for someone to get back to me.

(As a complete aside, I emailed Wellington City Council about something - 10 days later, still only crickets!)

My memory was that somebody had said that was the case in a thread on geekzone quite a long time back where this problem was discussed. I've just tried to find it and while I've read through quite a few threads I've been unable to find the one I remember. Quite possibly I am misremembering then.

All I can say for sure is that the 2degrees voicemail system has been losing my voicemail settings for many many years at this point. I setup a message every 2-3 months when I get a voicemail that I need to check. Then by the time the next time I check it's always completely forgotten my settings and makes me go through the new voicemail user setup process again.

And I'd given I gave the best information I had in good faith. It's one thing to point out of I been misinformed. But the way you stated it didn't come off very polite.

Seems odd that a deactivated account can still accept a voicemail when it does occur. Is it a way of keeping "active" accounts low to avoid paying user fees for the VM system?

Voicemail is free on 2degrees Pay Monthly, Prepay and Business Choice plans.

Mobile calling rates will apply if you're using a landline or calling from another mobile network (if calling from another phone you’ll have to enter your Voicemail PIN to enter).

They probably don't get much revenue from VM; so I imagine they'll be doing this for financial reasons; and having a low number of active accounts could be one way to keep both licensing and capacity costs down, yes.
