There's not much more to say about Orcon that hasn't been said... let me recap for you:

Kordia (effectively a soe) seriously overpaid buy Orcon off Seeby et el.
Orcon hasn't made a profit in the last 5 years.
Orcon is under a lot of pressure to not deliver another big loss this year by it's parent company.
Orcon had to raise it's prices awhile back (end of 2008?) .
Orcon attracts primarily younger geekier heavy users.

From the above you can imagine they have put the squeeze on buying more expensive international bandwidth and are trying to get away with using what they have currently across more users.

Basically expect high contention for shared bandwidth in peak time and this to not change any time soon.

Not much better here.

I think I am being acclimatised to my speeds slowly getting worse. I'll know this, when I will be grateful for any connection at all.

I jumped ship 30 minutes ago... new connection up by Thursday next week hopefully. I'll see what the difference is.

I didn't really want to switch but the connection speed / quality has become important for me.

I would have thought their overage pricing model of $2 GB would earn them a lot over time. If they get heavy users, $2GB adds up fast. I was often spending $150 a month with them. The funny thing is, it's cheaper for me to switch away and I probably will get better service.

I just moved into Pt Chev in Auckland. During quiet times my speed test shows 18Mbits. Just downloaded the latest Daily Show Ep and download speed peeked at 14.5Mbits. Not too bad for Orcon as when I was a Papatoetoe sometimes I'd be lucky with 500Kbits Intl..

Don't you think the isp's will have sites such as speedtest.net flagged so priority is given to anyone running a test from this site, so unfortunately I don't think you can read too much into these results other than doing a relative compare from same servers at same time, you can still see if one isp is twice as fast although the actual speeds from both isp's are probably bs. Orcon is down to a crawl at the times that most of us want to use the internet, has been like this way for a while now, some months back it was pretty good after been awful for a longtime, knew it would not last and sure enough we are back to paying for a service that is not delivered. Youtube is unusable at the time of writing this because of the extremely slow speeds, i.e non-broadband speeds at broadband prices.

Well I got a cabinet is my area today and now I'm only connecting at half the speed.

What a mickey mouse operation we have in this country.

So I guess I'll need to switch to Telecom to get decent speed? Or is there any alternative?

I know how you feel. Pretty sure the cabinet in my street was upgraded on Tuesday. My speeds have almost halved as well. Waiting for a response from Orcon as to what they will do.

Well I have to totally disagree with you, the FTTN program is one of the most progressive actions short of actually rolling out FTTH that can be implemented. Telecom should be applauded for the effort they have applied in the last 18-24months to achieve what they have today.

As noted elsewhere, before Orcon offered LLU connections they were well aware that cabinetisation would have issues such as you experience, you issue should be directly pointed at Orcon, not Telecom.

I disagree, simply because the cabinet process in my area leaves me lacking on what Orcon where providing and there is no alternative except Telecom.

I have a legacy account with Orcon, MAX/MAX and 15Gb at a price that was so good and usage terms including fixed IP etc that was so suitable.

Now I am facing big latency during peak periods and low download speed, my up speed has even dropped (possibly orcon since it appears to be capped rather than a back-haul issue).

I can get passable down speed at non peak hours that match what I used to have all the time but my up speed has just gone static. Now this could also in my none main centre situation be that Telecom are overusing the back haul affecting the available bandwidth to non telecom customers.

I have been collecting reports on speed for the last couple of months and will be tackling Orcon about it but expect to get no where.

Time for me to go to a commercial level account and get an SLA.
