Snackos: Well I got a cabinet is my area today and now I'm only connecting at half the speed.

What a mickey mouse operation we have in this country.

So I guess I'll need to switch to Telecom to get decent speed? Or is there any alternative?

Yeah same thing happened to me, i got moved a cabinet on the 30th of july and speeds dropped to 2mbps.
Just give orcon a ring and tell them about the cabinet and they'll do speedtests and then move you off the orcon+ network to the normal orcon plans on the wholesale network.

An email from them a few days ago,
New broadband and telephone equipment has been installed in your area. This work has been carried out in order to shorten the length of the copper line that broadband and telephone services are delivered over. Unfortunately, as we have found after investigation you are now getting interference on your line which is causing slower speeds than normal. To rectify this we will move you off of our equipment in the exchange onto the new equipment in the local cabinet.

What will this mean for you?
You can still expect to receive great service from us and no extra charges will be applied to your account. Important things to note include:

- Your monthly base fee will remain the same
- Your phone number will not change
- You'll still have amount of to use each month
- You’ll continue to have access to the smart phone features (voicemail, caller ID and call waiting)
- There will be a short period (up to four hours) during which your broadband and telephone service will not work on the day that you are moved over
- Your invoice will look different to what you usually receive as we’ll need to make manual credit adjustments

Oh my god, they still say that?

one part of it is false, the part that says you still have amount of to use each month..

Before I was moved I had 30GB per month, 5GB from Orcon+ and 25GB extra.

After I got moved to Purple I got 1GB + 25GB extra, that is 4GB less.

I sent an e-mail to them asking about the discrepancies, and they said they'd look into the "wording" of the e-mails they sent out.....

^ When I got cabinetised and put down to the Purple plan they automatically gave me a 5GB add-on for free to my plan so that it was the same as the Silver Plus plan that I was on previously. However, when I wanted to get a 10GB add-on added to my plan a month ago, they said it wasn't possible as I already had the 5GB add-on in place......After explaining to them numerous times that I never chose the original 5GB to be considered as an 'add-on' and that I expect a total of 15GB of data on my account (only 10 of which that I actually pay for) they finally agreed to do it. I guess I'll find out if they did it correctly when the bill comes in this month.

Also, I tried to get my Smart Phone bundle (caller ID etc) disabled as I don't use enough to justify the cost every month, but they said that if they disabled it then I'd lose the credit every month that I get for being cabinetised as it wouldn't be the same 'set-up' as the Silver Plus plan I was on previously....So I either save $15 a month from not having the Smart Phone bundle or lose a $35 credit every month - The choice was easy.

Check your bill next month to see if they're giving you a credit due to cabinetisation. If not, call them up and ask for one.

I disagree, simply because the cabinet process in my area leaves me lacking on what Orcon where providing and there is no alternative except Telecom.

That's not true, you can still stay with Orcon and have your connected provided by Telecom Wholesale instead. And you'll get better speeds than you were getting before in most (if not all) cases.

Well I have finally sent a terse coms to Orcon and I will report the results, it included a 2 month csv of my speed tests showing off there own servers the deterioration of there service.

Just been connected to BLL/BW Cabinet on Wednesday. Was previouslly on LLU plan from the ELL exchange so not hugely fast, but reasonably reliable and around 3.2 Mbps, so useable for most purposes.

As of Wednesday this dropped to 1Mbps. I can't even watch Youtube.

Orcon advised they will put me on the wholesale plan at no extra cost, but also told me this is a rare occurance.

B*llocks

This can and will happen to most LLU customers over 3kms from the exchange when they are cabinetised. The interference caused by ADSL2+ at the cabinet will kill connections with a high noise level on the line.

Cabinets aren't designed to be used like this - if the cabinet's there, it's there for a point and people should be connected to it. period.

What a Mickey Mouse stop-gap solution just because these telcos can't get mini DSLAMs into the street furniture.

Orcon's fault - yes. They knew this would happen and didn't proactively warn consumers who were likely to be affected to give them the choice.

Chorus' fault - yes. Despite operational separation, total lack of involvement with anyone but the Evil Empire

Orcon's wonderful lack of contracts means I've given them an ultimatum of 2 weeks, then I'm walking.

Orcon emailed me saying they will move me to the cabinet, but I just need to click on their batch file to send network stats to them. Ok I guess.

I really don't care who is at fault, and neither do 99% of the general public. I just find it mickey mouse that through no fault of my own, my speeds have been cut in half. I just want this crap sorted out. Having a bunch of companies bickering with each other while we suffer really looks unprofessional.

Add in the fact that it is only because of my tech background that I even knew that the area now has a cabinet...most people are totally unware of this and probably don't even know why their speed has been cut in half. Many of which wont bother to follow up. It really is shabby.

International bandwidth is so slow the last three days its not even funny...called them earlier and asked me to do a line test that is obviously not going to help..

Anyone know whats a good ISP in auckland to switch to?

I switched from Orcon to Telecom about 6 weeks ago because of the same problems you describe. I put up with orcon for too long. Telecom has been great so far, no regrets and no problems with performance.

Telecom's offering a double data rate for 6months thingy!
so if u sign up for 40GB u can get 80GB for the first 6 months.

They can afford to do so is purely due to their efficiency!

Yeah I saw that deal from Telecom. THat's a great deal.

I really don't see the advantage of me staying with Orcon? Even if they move me to the cabinet like they said, they will limit my speed anyway.

So it seems perfectly logical to switch to Telecom, get that deal, and get potentially twice the speed at the same time.
