arthurhh: Well I have finally sent a terse coms to Orcon and I will report the results, it included a 2 month csv of my speed tests showing off there own servers the deterioration of there service.

I wound them up, got a reply, not impressed at this stage, will advise more as we go onwards.

They want me to run what sounds like a net root-kit so they can monitor my connection, well yes/no/maybe.

WoW Orcon ... Woot for the latency, but I'll be damned for the LA performance ... I'll stick to my MOST INCONSISTENT ISP EVER (lately) comment ... man I need to get moving on changing ...

(taken right now and explains why I DC on ANY activity in Raid. Is this something to do with your Wellington/Porirua issue as even to Auckland, my tests are less than one third of normal.

I've had enough finally of Orcon and their (non) performance of late. When you cant even watch You Tube (SD 360p) on a Saturday afternoon, you know that something is stuffed. Shall be calling them this week to terminate my contact with them and then organise to move to someone like Snap or Vodafone Naked DSL

I'm in the same boat.  Went to Orcon when Xtra had issues (pre-ADSL2+ etc) and after 4 years of being with Orcon, I hate to say it but .... they kind of suck now and it's their own fault and no one else.  Last year was the beginning of more failures to come imo (around May 2009).
I called two friends in the last 30 minutes on Telecom who both say their game experience is normal i.e. no dropouts, no lag, and no crap speeds to LA.

Again ... *sigh*.

This is why I asked about the outage they had for Wellington/Porirua.  Are you down this way?  I'm assuming it *could* be screwed up routes up the track, and if that's the case, Orcon needs to hire better techs and/or Implement better backups and resiliency somewhere.

The fact remains, their service is sub-par overall and a lot is due to their lack of communications and openness.

Nope, I'm in Auckland. Something definitely appears to be wrong down there as my ping is extremely high to Wellington.

Here's some comparative results between Wellington and Christchurch:

EDIT: And one within Auckland:

Hmmmm ... so the Wellington/Porirua "outage" specified on the Orcon status page and listed as "Resolved", is clearly not.

Also just to note, my ADSL2+ router/modem has connected at anywhere between 18 and 19Mb/s down, and 800Kb/s to 1Mb/s up every time.

Some rolling tests using "Test Again" - i waited a few seconds, cleared local cache, and ran a separate one each time with these results:

hmmm better?

  Looking good!

Hmmmmm ....

Oh here they are ... pretty much the next 4 after this were also sub-1Mb/s or just over. GG!?  I stopped here.

Yes, I also logged a ticket but bluntly refused to answer a template type support sheet on the other side of the phone.  I'm way past through with that process ...

My key word, as a reminder ... *inconsistent*   Undecided

Daylo.

Where in NZ are you? Are you on a ADSL2+ exchange?

I'm in Wellington and yes I'm on an ADSL2+ exchange. This has only started in the last 2 to 3 days hence the query around the Wellington/Porirua outage earlier.

Here's another couple of tests done a few minutes ago.  I could do some more trace routes, but in my opinion it's probably moot.  Am I being punished? Has my local exchange disowned me?  Cry

  Surprised

The poor Auckland result suggests a problem locally as I've always been able to get >=5mbits to the Auckland server on all the Orcon connections I've used. But then they're all Auckland connections at various exchanges. Right now I'm getting 14mbits on an ADSL2+/LLU connection.

Probably worth reporting the issue to Orcon as it might be a WLG--AKL or exchange backhaul issue.
