I rang support this morning and was told by the guy on the phone that there's no ADSL2 network available in my area and I need to change the setting on my modem to G.Lite

I told him that I've been on ADSL2+ for nearly 1 1/2 years (after I was cabinetized) and my modem still connects at ~19Mbit down 1Mbit up. After not getting anywhere with him I asked to talk to his supervisor, who apparently was on a call and would ring me back in half an hour. After spending 2 hours waiting for his call, I had to go to work.

All I called for was to let them know my connection was slow (~50KB/s from orcon akamai servers) and that if enough people call they would look at it.

Btw is Orcon's call centre still in NZ?

My internet crapped out completely a few hours ago. After calling Orcon and changing a bunch of stuff I didn't need to, they told me to do an isolation test. I couldn't be stuffed doing that since I've done it numerous times in the past and it's never been the cause of the problem (and everything has been working fine for months). About two hours later the internet magically started working again and all has been fine since. What made it go down in the first place, God only knows....

Aaaand, normal service has resumed. I don't know exactly what time it came back, but it was a long "outage" or slowdown this time.

Ok is it really that bad in orcon world... Im using XNET and am now unhappy with my internet connection due to the stuff which has happened recently. It is quiet bad over here, but when I read this thread things sound even worse at Orcon

... I saw some posts of some peoples speed tests on here and they had really good ping (could be location and interleaving off??). But my pings are just unacceptably bad. I like to play online games, servers are in Aussie, I get bad ping, am not happy. Recently started getting packet loss on my favorite game server, (not saying its entirely my ISPs fault but it did happened around the time they started all this crap), and felt my internet performance had degraded overall (speed as well), so I started running network monitoring tools and have identified packet loss on their network (none on mine) during certain times of the day.

Im seriously considering and really do want to change to another ISP, was thinking Orcon looked good, but I am hearing many bad things. Was thinking of ORCON BRONZE with +100GB monthly data allowance for a total of 105GB and $120 a month. But pings need to at least not be worse. It needs to have less packetloss than WXC, and it needs to have some sort of guaranteed level of service/speed, I download .torrents(p2p) and browse/play games at evening/night.

Could someone tell me what it would be like if I where with orcon? Does anyone know if it is better or worse than xnet at the moment?

I've been with Orcon for about a month now. No issues to report bar one: Streaming Video. Offshore streaming video (YouTube,Vimeo,Apple Trailers, etc) is often times very slow to load. 30 minutes for a 75MB file is unacceptable.

Torrents, browsing, Cloud backup etc are all quite snappy on my line though.

The pings look fine most of the time - occasionally it gets pretty bad for a few days then fixes itself for a month. But the low, low speeds that sometimes occur (like the most recent complaints we've been posting, from yesterday/very early this morning) basically make it so unless your online gaming uses very little bandwidth, the latency will rapidly increase simply because the connection can't handle moving the data. Bit tired, so excuse if this doesn't make sense, but as an example - Idling in MMO's, ping remains fine, but put any strain on the line through PvP or whatever, ping will jump accordingly. Even with low ping speed tests yesterday, was still reading over 3000ms in game when doing something active, 200ms or less when idle.

That's only when Orcon's having speed issues though, and may not relate to everyone regardless. When the speeds are okay, which is most of the time with exception to a few nights with no explanation here and there, the latency tends to be good all around.

You could switch anyway and see for yourself, though I'd be hesitant to advocate it with the random issues that crop up, as the lack of help/information from tech support is insanely frustrating... but I don't believe they have a disconnection fee outside of needing to give a month's warning (unless things have changed since I altered plans a year and a bit ago and asked about it).

Thanks for the warning about Xnet too, was considering switching.

I don't think that's it.
The first time I noticed it happening was the 15th of Sep. I don't know about prior to that cos I was on LLU and had a different set of issues.

Edit: Oh, and data is slow for me too, but not as slow as last night, which is odd, it's different from the usual behaviour. I'm getting 1Mbps down from LAX, where usually it's either 5-7Mbps or 0.4-0.5 Mbps, one or the other.

Edit2: I'm also getting slightly higher latancy than usual, where for me ping is usually rock solid regardless of down speed. It's usually 140ms, but tonight I'm getting 180ms from LAX. Not a big issue, but it's an anomaly. Tonights slowdown might be just due to peak traffic, I dunno.

Again, I wish someone in the know at ORCON would tell us what is going on!!!! I know at least 1 staff member watches this thread.

Ye, when I said better than last night, 0.6Mbps to LA is better than 0.3Mbps. :P But definitely horrible. Just hope it clear up before whenever it happened to early this morning.

Your comment about the 15th of September is about the same as what I have noticed for my connection going wrong. My modem was however screwed, got a new one but still get Vent lag, Disconnects from lag, slow youtube and a whole host of other bad international traffic. After all who uses national for gaming and media really...

What sucks is, the thing is I use Tokyo for my gaming... which is great as the international is bad... really bad.

And I am about 500m or so from the Airedale/Mayoral Exchange... I live right in the middle of town...

I have interleaving off, the fastest profile and I have questioned my line speed and they have told me I am basically on the maximum they can possibly offer, 21/22mbs download, as my line and the location to the exchange from tests on their end and literally they have said this many a time, perhaps commented about 6-8 times about this line speed, the only variation is that one guy said 19mb, rest have said the 21/22 or max possible; where resistances/wiring etc

So if I were to ring up and make a futher complaint again, what would some good points to bring up here, I see you guys talking a fair bit about some networking protocols changing, however I am not really educated" on all the terms and changes for networks, more so the orcon changes.

Can't even stream stuff from TVNZ at the moment. What an appalling service Orcon is offering. I only hope that they don't stuff up my 'upgrade' this weekend (where they're promising to give me a higher cap for less money)
