Hey guys, I got called in by a customer at the local retirement village, as they were experiencing big problems with their internet (with orcon).  Basically it keeps disconnecting frequently (sometimes every 10 seconds, sometimes every minute, and sometimes they get 10 odd minutes of usage before it disconnects.  Both ADSL and internet lights go out, and they reconnect again automatically after a minute or 2.  Ive tried 2 different modems, and they both do the same, so i've eliminated the modem.  The ADSL sync speeds are good (see the stats below) but a speedtest on the orcon speedtest site comes up with a speed of around .33 MBps download but the upload is fine, usually near the 1.5Mbps.  Because its in a retirement village, the setup is a bit different, but basically they have the line coming from the big green telecommunications box to their unit into a comms box on the side of the unit, the line goes into a VDSL filter, and the internet side goes to a patch panel which I then loop to a data port into the house, and i plug the modem straight into this port.  (Ive done this in a lot of the villas now, so i know it works fine), the phone side of the filter goes out to the phone system.  Phones are working fine.  Ill post the stats below to see if they help.  The customer has contacted Orcon twice about this, the first time the chorus guy came out and checked at the demarc point (the big green comms box) but wasnt allowed to test any further than this, and not having any gear to test myself makes it difficult.  But he said its fine to the demarc.  Which in a way suggests between a problem between the demarc point and the houses wiring.  But the good Sync speeds suggest there is no problem there.  Oh and ive tried 2 different computers, both via ethernet, so i know its not a computer problem. If anyone has any ideas i could try would be much appreciated.  Oh the second call to orcon is still on going, the customer is waiting for a callback.

Cheers,

Aaron, Cambridge

You pretty much got it. It was a common problem a few years ago when the cabinetisation project was in full swing. A ULL connection from an exchange would suddenly have a new cabinet installed, half way down the line from the exchange. This was excellent news for the majority of people connected to the cabinet, but if you where on a ULL connection to (say) Orcon or another ULL provider you ended up with interference from the cabinet.

The solution to use the cabinet, rather than just be passed through it - i.e. get on a Chorus connection, not ULL - older posts will call this Telecom Wholesale.
