Hey guys, I got called in by a customer at the local retirement village, as they were experiencing big problems with their internet (with orcon).  Basically it keeps disconnecting frequently (sometimes every 10 seconds, sometimes every minute, and sometimes they get 10 odd minutes of usage before it disconnects.  Both ADSL and internet lights go out, and they reconnect again automatically after a minute or 2.  Ive tried 2 different modems, and they both do the same, so i've eliminated the modem.  The ADSL sync speeds are good (see the stats below) but a speedtest on the orcon speedtest site comes up with a speed of around .33 MBps download but the upload is fine, usually near the 1.5Mbps.  Because its in a retirement village, the setup is a bit different, but basically they have the line coming from the big green telecommunications box to their unit into a comms box on the side of the unit, the line goes into a VDSL filter, and the internet side goes to a patch panel which I then loop to a data port into the house, and i plug the modem straight into this port.  (Ive done this in a lot of the villas now, so i know it works fine), the phone side of the filter goes out to the phone system.  Phones are working fine.  Ill post the stats below to see if they help.  The customer has contacted Orcon twice about this, the first time the chorus guy came out and checked at the demarc point (the big green comms box) but wasnt allowed to test any further than this, and not having any gear to test myself makes it difficult.  But he said its fine to the demarc.  Which in a way suggests between a problem between the demarc point and the houses wiring.  But the good Sync speeds suggest there is no problem there.  Oh and ive tried 2 different computers, both via ethernet, so i know its not a computer problem. If anyone has any ideas i could try would be much appreciated.  Oh the second call to orcon is still on going, the customer is waiting for a callback.

Cheers,

Aaron, Cambridge

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Sounds like the building wiring needs checking by the customer, no way around that at this point. Straightfoward intermittant fault seen every day.

As it has been tested to the demarc and cpe swapped the building wiring is next suspect but that is the householders responsibility (or building owner possibly in this situation).

Orcon can arrange that check for you but it is chargeable.

Hi FireEngine.

Thanks for your reply.  I have the guys responsible for the telecommunications for the village coming to check the wiring tomorrow as well, as a just in case.  Will get back to you as soon as that completed.

Cheers

Aaron

Just an update.  Its all fixed now.   The chorus guy came out yesterday to check the line.  I wasnt there so im only going by the customers info.  But once the customer told the guy that the download was very slow but the upload was fine, the chorus guy seemed to click to something.  It seemed to happen after the orcon takeover apparently, so after a phone call to orcon and a couple of go's, they had done something to the customers account during the takeover that upset their profile or something, orcon changed something, and finally the download speeds are up at 9Mbps.  Possibly if anyone else has been affected by this, and have the same problem would be the first thing to check.  Cheers

Aaron

Move off ULL gear probably given the 6dB noise margin

Ohh true, can that cause a problem with download speeds sometimes?

Yep - do a search for midspan injection.

Thanks, i might be completely wrong here, seeing as google cant tell me anything so i had a search on here, but because they are cabinetised, when the takeover was done they were put onto a LLU connection, but should have been on a wholesale connection?  Is this right?  Sorry i could only find reference to Midspan injection, no description of exactly what it is/does.  If i googled it all it would come up with was POE injectors LOL.

You pretty much got it. It was a common problem a few years ago when the cabinetisation project was in full swing. A ULL connection from an exchange would suddenly have a new cabinet installed, half way down the line from the exchange. This was excellent news for the majority of people connected to the cabinet, but if you where on a ULL connection to (say) Orcon or another ULL provider you ended up with interference from the cabinet.

The solution to use the cabinet, rather than just be passed through it - i.e. get on a Chorus connection, not ULL - older posts will call this Telecom Wholesale.
