Hi,

Anyone besides me getting really poor speeds on gmail / google connections?  Using the ISP's DNS, so any load balancing / caching should be active (if they provide this).

For example, here is a traceroute to Facebook (good response times:)

$ traceroute www.facebook.com
traceroute to star-mini.c10r.facebook.com (179.60.193.36), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets
 1  (192.168.X.1)  1.127 ms  0.773 ms  0.750 ms
 2  * * *
 3  ext.cpcak4-r1.tranzpeer.net (101.98.0.66)  13.722 ms  11.903 ms  11.892 ms
 4  pts-s.cpcak4-r1.tranzpeer.net (101.98.5.21)  12.301 ms  11.695 ms  11.824 ms
 5  as4610.nsw.ix.asn.au (218.100.52.94)  35.235 ms  35.940 ms  37.870 ms
 6  as32934.nsw.ix.asn.au (218.100.52.99)  34.273 ms  36.707 ms  36.890 ms
 7  psw01b.syd1.tfbnw.net (173.252.66.53)  35.436 ms
    psw01c.syd1.tfbnw.net (173.252.66.52)  37.618 ms
    psw01b.syd1.tfbnw.net (173.252.66.53)  36.223 ms

 9  edge-star-mini-shv-01-syd1.facebook.com (179.60.193.36)  35.679 ms  36.493 ms  35.858 ms

and here is a traceroute to GMail (mail.google.com):

$ traceroute mail.google.com
traceroute to googlemail.l.google.com (216.58.199.37), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets
 1  (192.168.X.1)  4.168 ms  0.914 ms  0.741 ms
 2  * * *
 3  ext.cpcak4-r1.tranzpeer.net (101.98.0.66)  12.945 ms  13.242 ms  11.989 ms
 4  pts-s.cpcak4-r1.tranzpeer.net (101.98.5.21)  12.425 ms  13.491 ms  11.791 ms
 5  72.14.243.237 (72.14.243.237)  71.124 ms  37.347 ms  39.866 ms
 6  72.14.243.236 (72.14.243.236)  35.744 ms  36.351 ms  35.827 ms
 7  216.239.40.223 (216.239.40.223)  246.337 ms
    216.239.40.233 (216.239.40.233)  254.100 ms  253.390 ms
 8  * * *
 9  * googlemail.l.google.com (216.58.199.37)  303.192 ms  1851.616 ms

"1851.616ms" - come on, that can't be "normal", surely??

So, what's happening between hopes 6 & 7 on my Gmail trace?

Currently, gmail is basically unusable.

Have tried a router reboot just on the off chance that it was something local.  It isn't as far as I can tell...

An Indonesian ISP (AS4800) is very kindly adverting one of our IP netblocks to Google in Singapore. Google is using this as perference over our peering in Sydney.

So if you are on this netblock, your traffic from Google is going via Singapore -> Indonesia -> NZ.

We are trying to get hold of the Indonesian ISP to resolve.
