I've recently been testing my newly minted Gig Fibre connection.  There's nothing quite like seeing 100MB/s coming down via the Internet!

However, one area which seems to be lacking (at least for me) is international upload speeds to anywhere other than Aus.

Now, I realise that there are a lot of elements involved in a connection between me and an overseas server, however, I get pretty decent download speeds, but disproportionately abysmal upload speeds:

Aussie is pretty good:

One of the major attractions with Fibre for me was access to significantly better upload speeds, but I'm pretty disappointed in the speeds I'm getting in this regard.

What are the rest of you seeing in terms of international upload speeds?

Likely your backup provider. To Crashplan (in the US) I am currently getting around 300Mbit. To Australia I can almost max out my line.

There was a period where upload wasn't looking too good as I stated earlier but this has been resolved for a good amount of time now. Just Speedtest gives us the impression it is not.

I've tested to Amazon S3 as well with similar results.  However, I'm working with my backup providers on this issue as well, but absent some kind of test I can use to eliminate my specific connection it remains a potential factor.

However, NickMack has been very helpful with this whole issue so I'm confident that we'll get to the bottom of it soon.

Hi All,

Thanks @SamF for working with us to investigate your speed to the US. We sent up a Fritzbox and one of our probes to look further into this.

We are able to simulate and replicate our customer environments well on our test bed, there are a lot of potential points in a network where congestion can occur, the obvious isn't always the cause of performance issues. We selected Fritzboxes as our CPE of choice for a number of reasons, whenever there is a new firmware available, before we release it to our customers,  we extensively test both data and voice components and work with AVM if we see any issues. The Fritzbox is extremely capable of pushing our current offering of 900/400.  Customers who choose to use another piece of hardware do so knowing that we haven't tested it. We have seen that devices that do packet inspection, intrusion detection etc take a large hit on the CPU of these devices, with the flow on affect being this can impact performance - Please be aware that a expensive device doesn't guarantee performance.

See results below from testing today.

I'm going to close this with the status "issue resolved".

I've verified all issues related to speed have been sorted on my own network and other networks (including @SamF). Services outside of 2degrees can, and will always have problems and this is the world we live in - NZ has incredibly good broadband and so "speed issues" are seen more frequently now when really there isn't a problem. Regardless, even with the Speedtest result we still beat Australia's NBN.

In conclusion - testing via Speedtest is no-longer a viable means of testing especially when the destination is a bit further away and the user is on a Gigabit connection. I don't know what has happened, but Speedtest has actually turned to crap over the last year. Just simply don't rely on this. If you believe your connection is truly under-performing and you can prove this outside of Speedtest and testing to multiple services then by all means call your ISP (this is a general rule) and get them to investigate.

Good job @NickMack - love your work. I'm putting this to bed now.
