Hi all,

Just wanted to share my experience with a "My Republic" salesman who came door knocking the other day and to see if other have had similar with My Republic.

I live in Hornby Christchurch and had an Indian guy from My Republic knock the other day, after telling me what he could offer I was interested so he asked if he could come in to tell me more, I let him in and he took a seat after I offered, he then asked my wife for a glass of water (fair enough I guess).

Next came the details, I told him I was using fibre x from Vodafone and I got 200 download and 50 upload for $79 (its actually $69 as I forgot about my discount). He then told me I could get 200 download and 20 upload with My Republic for $75 per month and free fibre install to the house. After I told him I would not be interested as the 20 upload is less than half of what I have now he started telling me that 20 upload would be better than my 50 upload and the fibre is better than fibre x cable. After he could see I was not so keen he started saying how the earthquake has damaged the Vodafone fibre x cables and they were now unreliable.

I tried to say the usual "I'll think about it" to get rid of him and then he started asking me "what is there to think about", slightly shocked I said I have to call Vodafone to see if I had a fixed term contract in place, he then took out his phone and said we can call them right now. I said no ill do it in my free time, he then suggested I sign up now anyway and will have five days to cancel if I change my mind (as if I am going to do that when I am not even sure). He finally left.

I then check the My Republic website which stated that their $75 per month plan he was takling about only has 100 upload rather than the 200 he tried to tell me.

Overall My Republic have really given themselves a bad name for me personally, has anyone else had similar with them?

gehenna:

TBH I'd be hard pressed to think of a time when I've heard of door-to-door sales going well for anyone involved.  If I'm ever inclined to let one of these people in the house it's going to be more for the wind-up factor than actual interest in what they have to offer.

I am guessing that is why there is a cooling off period with this sort of marketing so that potential buyers can do their research afterwards. IMO I would like to see door knocking laws go the way of spam emails and texts.
