TLDR: My broadband internet is running at 100/100, not 200/100 (from Christchurch). Tried contacting support. 3 hour wait.

I signed up to the September deal, where you get Amazon prime, some credit and a reduced price for 12 months. Boy has 2degrees been a disappointment.

Obviously the first thing I did after being connected to 2degrees was to test the speed via speedtest. After reading this forum, I reckon it's not provisioned properly. So the solution is to give the call centre a call.

After waiting in the queue for about 3 hours, I had to convince them that my internet was setup correctly for speedtesting, plugged into ethernet, not on WiFi etc...

I'm using the same hardware as I did on Orcon which gave me 200/100 (not on PPPoE).

Still 2degrees have not solved this issue. A really poor start for a new customer...

Hi All,

Thank you for all your responses and advice, it has been very helpful.

  • I called up 2degrees right at the stroke of 8am, and was told to call back once the call centres were open at 8am. So I immediately called back hoping to be the first in the queue. (Options 9 for broadband then option 3 for tech support)
  • After about 1.5 hours on hold I got picked up by their tech support.
  • They said they did not provision the speed profile correctly and said they usually do it 'manually' or after the customers request it.
  • I told them it was strange that I signed up for a particular speed profile but I had to call them for it to be applied. Otherwise it would default to 100Mbits down.
  • I also queried the huge support delays of 1.5 hours hold, and they said there wasn't anything they could do about that, but that they were trying to improve it. The lady on the line sounded very frayed too, a bit stressed and sighed a lot.
  • She then put me on the correct profile, asked me to reset the router and I reran the speed test and now I'm getting the advertised speeds.

I've been tinkering with the Mikrotik and Fritz!Box, and am able to get 15% faster speeds (230Mbps vs 195ish) with the Mikrotik with specialised settings. I think I will stick with the Mikrotik because I get faster speeds and it provides more network setting options / flexibility than the Fritz!Box.
