Hi all, I have registered my own domain name at hover.com ($15 US a year), and have a small web page setup here at home on a cheap server I bought, and plan to have a small virtual world setup (if you have heard of osgrid you will know what I talking about) :)

From what I have been able to figure out (completly new at this) - I have to redirect my domain name so it points at the IP address that snap gives me, which is kinda a pain when my IP address changes..

I may be wrong, but I think this leaves me with 2 choices...
1) Get snap to give me a static IP address ($60 NZ a year) - or -
2) Move my domain name to snap ($49.50 NZ a year)

Static IP address I understand, but I think I would still have to re-direct/forward (correct or not? )
Moving my domain name to snap, I don't know anything, and cannot find anything about it at all, would I still have the redirect thing etc?, can anyone tell me please?

Hope this kinda makes sense :)

snaps static ips are free, your assigned one when you sign up, its just not actived till you ring them up.

Yes, a static IP address can be supplied at a cost of $5.00 a month.

Please contact support on 0800 276 232, or email us at support@snap.net.nz and we can setup a static IP for your connection.

Once you have a static IP assigned to your account, you will need to make sure your username is entered in your modem as @snap.net.nz

you could get cheap hosting in the usa, that way you get reverse dns too and ddos protection

I used to have a server in the US, it cost me $100 US a mth) - thats the reason, when I got the chance to pick up a cheap second hand server here I jumped at it, figured what I saved by not having the server overseas would more than pay for the cost of the server I bought here :)

$100/m must be a full dedicated server

You don't have to move your domain to Snap. You need a static IP address and on your DNS you create A records pointing your domain to this IP, otherwise each time the IP changes at your home you will have to manually change the DNS records. This is nothing to do with Snap.

There are services that provide dynamic IP - dyn.com for example, but the dynamic IP service uses their own domain name, something like "yourname.homeip.net" (there are lots of domains to use, not only homeip.net).

Yea, I figured that much out :) - I was more wondering about if I moved my domain to snap would it do away with having to point my domain to the snap Ip address??

Setup a dynamic dns, and either your router (if it supports it) or a small app on your server, notifies dyn regularly of your IP address, so that youraddress.homeip.net always directs to your router, even if its IP changes. Then setup a CNAME domain record (instead of an A record) to youraddress.homeip.net.

"youraddress.homeip.net" will be hidden to visitors - they will only see your proper domain (i.e. the one registered at hover)

Dyn offers a comprehensive service for $20 per year, or you can try some other free providers like no-ip. So this is probably your cheapest option

Moving the domain to Snap will not solve the problem. Follow the suggestion above about using Dyn.com and a CNAME record:

1.Create dyn.com account
2.Create a host on dyn.com
3.Download the auto updater or configure your router to automatically update (if it supports it)
4.Update DNS, removing any A records for your domain, instead creating CNAME records pointing to the dyn.com domain name you created in (2).

You mean you have got shared hosting on a server, sharing it with thousands of other websites. A dedicated server costs hundred per month.
