I'm considering upgrading to VDSL with Snap, but I'm worried about a technical issue that occasionally pops up with my ADSL connection and whether this might cause any issues when switching to VSDL. I'm reluctant to sign up for a 2 year contract if there might be problems.

In a nutshell, whenever Chorus flicked my account to EUBA it would cause my traffic throughput to plummet every 30 seconds. I'd get 25 seconds of throughput followed by about 10 seconds of nothing, literally every minute. Eventually Snap and I figured out the problem and they switched my account back to BUBA and everything was fine. But every few months Chorus flick my connection to EUBA and I have to call Snap to get them to change to back, which they're always happy to do. Snap never really could explain why EUBA causes such a problem, though one guy suggested it could be old firmware at the exchange.

So my question is, does VDSL use the same technology, or depend on EUBA? Am I likely to encounter this sort of problem if I switch to VDSL?

I'm nopt sure on the technicalities but VDSL2 does use ethernet. The service is known as WVS rather than EUBA and I believe it may use the same DSLAMs as EUBA.

i think vdsl is using new line cards, so probably has newer firmware. you're more likely to have "different" issues than the same, but i'd recommend bringing just that up with Snap's normal support and see about upgrading to vdsl and still being able to go back if they can't fix your issue.

although your problem does sound bizzare, and uncommon, and i would recommend at least trying a different modem.

I personally had a similar issue, and it continued after an upgrade to VDSL.
The resolution (after many months in depth testing) was a port change, though you would certainly need to rule out the modem / wiring etc first.

Are you with Snap for ADSL at the moment? if not, and you do join us, we will happily work with you to resolve the problem :)

You are not alone. Have a read of this thread.

I've had exactly the same issue, as have a few others here as well. The resolution in each case has been a swap to a new port.

I was about to point you to this thread, but you know about that ;-) Looking at your symptoms, I wonder if a port change would also resolve your issue without resorting to BUBA.
