I have Orcon and one of the handy features is going to there homepage and seeing current data usage without having to log in.  I'm Win8, Chrome, LLU connected.

Have a friend who has just changed over to them and it doesn't do it for him.  He has WinXP, Chrome & is also LLU connected.

We are on the same exchange even.  If I take my laptop to his place, it shows data usage so it's not the connection.  Any one have any ideas.  Sad thing is that I know computers well and it has me stumped.  Not something that I like.

Flash, Java, scripting all enabled in his browser ?
Any ad blocking software or 3rd party firewall (such as Zonealarm or Norton Internet Security) ?

Flash - Yes
Java - Need to check
Scripting - Yes
AdBlock extension - Same as me

Your comment about firewall has made me think of one thing, he is using Avast so will check it's settings.  Also just had another thought, I should try IE that is also on there (stupid user mistake).

Will reply back once have checked which should be tomorrow.

Cheers for the ideas.

Query ?  If you don't login how can Orcon know whose data useage to display?

If you go to orcon.net.nz on an Orcon connection, the homepage has a different section that shows a usage summary.  If you are not on their network, you have to log in to see it.  It is very handy to get quick update near end of billing month.

Knowing how Orcon identifies your connection will doubtless provide the answer. cookies?

When you connected your laptop on friends network did you get his or your data useage ?

They identify it by means of being your ISP - they can match the IP address against their records of who's connected and display the data usage of whatever connection you are on.

Obviously it's a whole lot more convoluted than that on the backend, but it most assuredly is not cookies or anything client side.

For reference, Flash and Java are nothing to do with it. It's an AJAX request to Orcon's servers that - if you're detected as a customer - returns your data usage, and if you're not then it returns something else or an error.

Is it possible you've got some sort of VPN or unblocking DNS set up that might be making your connection proxy through to Orcon? In this case, they wouldn't be able to see you as a customer, so if you have anything like that try disabling it.

Interesting.  I shall continue following this thread as I can only get data useage by logging in. I have no VPNs or added proxy settings.

I used to find this feature handy too, before their latest updates to the orcon.net.nz, at which point I had to begin logging in to get usage data from home. I contacted them as it appeared something had broken, and was told the feature was no longer offered. In response to my disappointment that I had lost a service I found useful they said the new portal was better, I beg to differ ;)

I still haven't had a chance to go and try anything out on the friends machine (bad time of year) but as soon as I do, I will reply back here with my findings.

Ok, tried a few things that people said to try.  In the end send a support ticket into Orcon (I know, should of done that sooner).  This is the reply that I got back to why it doesn't work for some people.

This usage meter app is designed to view the account information for the Orcon IP address, the unique internet address, that you are currently accessing the web-page from.

Due to the fact that many of our newer plans have a dynamic IP address, an IP address that can change frequently, the usage meter app on our homepage is currently unable to access your account. This is because the system cannot ascertain what account currently has your IP address.

Our systems team are working on a fix, which should restore functionality, but we have yet to hear of any ETA for this.

Rats, oh well, at least they know about it.

Thanks to everyone who replied.

Hmm that reply almost implies we dont know which customer has which IP. Which of course we do.
What isnt in place is the tool that updates your IP in the database used by the website widget that displays usage without login.

At this point we havent scoped it, so sorry to say it still has no ETA.
