I don't really need to know this, just satisfying my curiosity :)

My understanding of the 2d-VF roaming arrangement was broadly that 2d customers cannot roam onto VF cell sites in areas where 2d coverage.
However I got back from a mountain bike ride behind Kapiti and found a txt from 2d saying that I was outside the MBB coverage zone - implying that I had roamed onto VF. Being the curious mountain biking geek that I am, I had ridden to most of the cell sites in the area, and aside from the micro-cells, the macro-cells ("high sites") of VF & 2d are usually within 100m of each other (although due to terrain they might have different 'views')

Are entire VF cell sites (in 2d areas) off limits to 2d roamers, or are certain panels on the VF site made off limits while other panels are available to roam on?

Heres a screenshot from Bartenders cellsite map. Locations 1 & 2 have a 2d, VF & TCom macro cell in close proximity. The other two VF sites are micro-cells that are licensed but haven't been built. The red circle is roughly where I was when I receive the txt

Anyone able to enlighten me?

Pretty much outside the main centers, you will end up on the most powerful signal. Even if there is a 2d tower near by.

Hmm at home (which is seaward of point 1 on the above map) I cannot choose the VF network (SIM doesnt support the network message).

Kapiti has had native 2d coverage since very early 2d days - I don't think any new sites have been built in the past couple of years

I am pretty sure the 2D tower in the carpark at the Raumati shop is new.

I have always had probs with 2D in Raumati South. I get the emergency only calls from Miro Cres to the shops at Raumati South and beyond.

Worth mentioning for our Auckland readers that Kapiti is a part of the Wellington region :) and afaik the 2d Wellington zone extends continuously from Wellington CBD to Kapiti (Waikanae specifically which is to the North of my map).

The issues in Pauls thread seem to relate to the beach areas, alleviated by the 2d microcell site at the Raumati Beach shops among others. The 2d macro cell site above Coastlands (point 1 on the map) has been there for a couple of years at least

That's it though - I would have expected 'emergency calls only' but instead it let me roam (well 'roamed' me automatically) when I was up in the hills, but won't let me roam down on the flat in Raumati - despite both areas being covered by the same pair VF & 2d sites.

Bugger - i guess that's what the sand dunes do. Wonder if they can justify a Rau South tower as well as the Rau Beach one?

VF has registered a radio license for a site on the corner of Matai Road & Poplar Ave for a few years now - but no signs of construction. If that goes ahead then most of Rau South might switch to VF!

Yeah, I think the area is part of the Wellington 'locked out' zone, but thats why I'm surprised that it let me roam onto VF while I was in a specific part of the area, but not in other parts

You'll see from our MBB Zone map - http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/mobilebroadband/broadbandzones - that the circle is outside our canopy so you will probably pick up a roaming signal if your phone senses one.

But the only VF sites afaik that can serve that location also serve urban Kapiti - including my home - hence my question can a VF cell site allow 2d roaming from some sector antennas but not others?

Cell sites are lock not by single cell, but LAC so there will be overlap. if this cell was locked out, then it may lock out half the south of the north island or something like that too.
