Would snap do this on a VDSL connection, and what would it cost?

Reason being, that now the line has moved from orcons own gear to a chorus resold analog line, there is no services at all on it, no caller id, no answering, etc etc.

If its cheaper to get it onto a voip line via the fritz then we would do that, but need to keep the analog line until the contract on the alarm monitoring is up and a 21st centrury capable monitoring vendor can be found.

In contract, cant change monitoring providers till contract is up.

But could you run an ATA and use a codec like g711? I know Sbiddle advises against it but perhaps it could be OK?

Why risk it? Likly to fail when you need it the most, means I have to worry about putting a UPS on the router and ATA etc.

Will move to a GSM/3G based solution when the time comes.

No Zeon, I totally disagree you will never want to do this and especially for alarm monitoring, you see the complaints around DTMF on SNAP if the alarm is using this you will have issues pure and simple do you really want to risk that, Alarms can use different types of connection techniques but don't do it ever, IP alarms or nothing the sooner these Alarm companies move into the new world the better, Modem based analogue is dead.

Yes I had the same setup with Snap at home (VDSL + POTS), although mine was a little strange as Snap POTS is resold Telecom POTS, I live in New Brighton and during the earthquake all the copper was broken between the exchange and the cabinet, so Snap via Telecom put us onto a Telecom VOIP line which I think at the time they referred to as baseband (Still analog at my house, but SIP to the cabinet), the Telecom technician at the cabinet joked that it took a Earthquake to get Telecom to provide VOIP :) Anyway since that happened my alarm stopped working.

Funny thing was that I recently changed my line to a Snap VOIP line and plugged my alarm back into the Fritz and it works well, however I have recently changed this (on advice of Snap, they were pretty adamant that you should not use the Fritz box for your alarm) they pointed me to a security company and I now have this installed over the security company's wireless network.
