back in November it was hinted that Orcon are launching VDSL http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=82&topicid=135132
with a promise to keep up to date; but nothing has appeared other than references to VDSL

Whats happening guys, love to know???

That statement is still valid, we are however (in common with other ISP's and Telco's), in a network change blackout period due to the holidays so you will have to be patient until a little later in January for further news.... :-)

Thanks fireengine, good to know at least it is close.

Is there any further developments (that you are able to tell us) on the router front? As the current one is not VDSL compatible.

I heard they were testing another device back in November etc but got no response as to if it would be an all in one unit like the Genius or just another router to plug in along side.... hoping its an all in one, I'm very limited on power sockets :-p (and no, I'm not plugging in yet another powerboard :) )

"Brownout - From 20th December to 7th January all telecommunications network providers including Chorus are in Christmas and New Year holidays"
Hopefully Orcon will announce its VDSL plans on - or soon after - 6 January.

Hopefully Orcon will announce its VDSL plans on - or soon after - 6 January.

Small correction RE Orcon: the last day of blackout is the 7th of Jan, for the brownout it's 14th Jan.

Orcon VDSL2 available 08 Jan 2014 [announced at end of Chorus 'blackout']

VDSL2 is now being offered on the Orcon website.
Enter your physical address to check VDSL availability.
$119 pm for (truly) unlimited, $95pm for 80GB (for a 12m contract without the optional extras).
No transfer/termination fee for existing Orcon customers on contract.
No connection fee.
Connection within 4-10 working days (the Chorus brownout will be over on Monday)
New VoIP modem "Orcon Genius White" supplied (looks quite different from the old Genius ADSL modem). "Free" rental. Keep your existing VoIP number.

I applied for a VDSL2 upgrade at the first opportunity - at 9am this morning (see above).
Orcon promised connection "within 4-10 working days".
By 3pm I had an install date - 17 January (7 business days).
Not bad as 14 Jan was the best case scenario.

A Full Install is required for VDSL so the number of installs per tech is lower than for ADSL where the tech just jumpers the connection at the exchange or cabinet but doesn't attend the premises in a large proportion of cases (so called self-install). That means we must have a slightly wider window on our RFS expectations, glad you got an RFS quickly - enjoy!

Hmmm, pm me your address (and account number if you are already with Orcon), and I'll take a look, I'm intrigued that you get a different feasibility result. It may be just that our and Telecom's handling of a "maybe" type answer is different...

The line requirements are always subject to what the actual tech finds onsite which is why the Full Install is mandatory.

Cool, I'll check it out on Thursday. Interestingly Telecom progress my address through their checker as VDSL Available which is laughable as we've only just been upgraded from ADSL1 via a Conklin in the cabinet :-)
