With Myrepublic launching unlimited 100/50 fibre plans with free unblocker service and voice calls for $109?  That's like $16 a month cheaper than Orcon.

Maybe there are some hooks i'm not noticing.

Perhaps you should just switch ISPs if you're not happy with Orcon?

I like Orcon as a company.  I'm just noticing the market shifting.  $16 a month isn't a minor difference for the same service.  If electricity had that kind of differential you'd notice too.

there is that sort of differential in the Electricity market. And while the actual service you get is the same, various electricity retailers have VERY different support models, ease of contact, payment options, payment surcharges and reward schemes.

I'm probably not to only person confused as to why anyone thinks a service offered in a competitive market should be pretty much the same price from all retailers regardless of value add features, support or cost models.

As mentioned above, just churn to the cheapest provider if that's your principle criteria (and there's NOTHING wrong with having that as your main criteria either)

Cheers - N

Electricity prices vary significantly between providers, certainly by a lot more than that sort of %

The great thing about a free market is that companies can charge whatever they want for a service. Many people will focus solely on price, many will not. It's the very same reason Jetstar can sell $99 same day flights to Auckland while Air NZ are selling the identical last minute product for $299

It wouldn't surprise me if we start to see increases in the 100Mbps and 200Mbps plans over the next year or so once the current ISP land grab ultimately comes to an end - selling a product with no margin just to get customers doesn't deliver a long term sustainable business.

Actual MyRepublic price for equivalent is $124 / month. It's only a limited time offering that gives you the better pricing.

But simple maths says MyRepublic is a good option atm. Talk to MyRepublic as there has been talk of signing up even if you don't have fibre installed in your street and the discount will still apply.

My Republic 100/50 with VoIP and national calls $109 = $1308 a year or $1308 for 15 months.
Verses
Orcon 100/50 with VoIP and national calls $139 = $1668 a year or $2085 for 15 months.

I spoke to the retentions team the other day and the best they could do was $125 a month for what I have now minus the phone which was effectively a price increase as it did not take into account the geekzone special I have of 100/50 with VoIP and national calls for $129 a month total.

Hey guys lets all jump on the cheapest newest provider that doesn't have a proven track record/reputation.... because that always works out well tongue-out

Personally I choose my provider on price/performance aka bang for buck... cheapest option is rarely the best option once you factor in quality (unless you don't care about quality) and you are taking a risk on a new entrant (they have to be priced cheaper or no one would switch).

You forgot to also include the risk of a provider with an "unlimited" option.

I think each person needs to decide their own tolerance for risk.  There is always risk in changing ISPs.

I changed to Bigpipe late last year, they were a new operation and had an unknown product.  They helped me share this risk by providing a period of free usage, just like Myrepublic is doing.  You can always change ISP if it doesn't work out.  The biggest risk is if it all goes bad you may be a week or two with no internet access.

If we had fibre in our street I'd be with myrepublic already (only because Bigpipe don't have a Wellington service yet).

Yup, personally I think people need to focus on VALUE, rather than just simple cost. VALUE takes into account a greater number of factors and is a better indication you are getting a BETTER DEAL.

I agree i'm on a grandfathered mobile plan on Vodafone but my Value to this plan is the data and not so much everything else.

Value will differ from person to person and I think in New Zealand there's a great market, there is plenty of choice to allow the individual to choose a provider and plan that meets their needs. For the most part the average person's value is the cost and obviously the lower that number the better value it has for that individual.

I think on here for the most part the value that people look for in their broadband connection is first speed and reliability then cost.
