After seeing the thread with the new $9 a month discount, I was browsing through my pricing options at Orcon and noticed the Naked VDSL at $95 a month.

The orcon website isn't exactly clear as to whether or not I get to keep my genius (voip through the orcon sip servers) phone number. I expect that I should since it's a voip service, not an old pots phone. But I would like some assurances before changing my plans.

Not sure what you mean. If you have a naked service, we don't provide a phone line. It's naked.

You're trying to have it both ways.

According to this, naked broadband should let me keep my genius "phoneline" In fact I plugged in a normal phone and just confirmed that I had no land line.

Are you saying your making me pay for an old fashioned phone line whilst only providing me with a voip offering, but will revoke my voip service if I opt for a naked broadband plan.

I'm glad I asked for confirmation now.

The phone line normally referenced is POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service). Generally it's fed out of equipment in the exchange, down the copper pair, to whatever is dangling off the end of the wiring in your house. You will not get this with Genius.

Instead what you get is a SIP solution that sends the voice data over your broadband connection. This is cheaper for all parties involved, but without some serious overhauling, is only accessible from the port on the router.

So, you're not paying for the old land line, you're getting a broadband service instead, it's a bit like mixing up Skype with old, real telephones.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

Just to clarify:

Genius is naked broadband (ie no POTS line), with a VOIP phone service.

Orcon naked broadband is a broadband service with NO phone service of any kind across it.

Hope that clears it up.

That clears up your offerings, which should be made clearer on the website.

This definitely does look like you're trying to have things both ways though. I'm not exactly pleased with the answer.

Me? It's sketchy advertising. They're playing on the "Naked" name, after already selling me "Naked" DSL services and requiring me give up my POTS "Homeline" years ago.

By every historical reference even on Orcon's own FAQ's I should be entitled to join their $95 a month "Naked" service with no changes to my orcon voip settings.

At the very least, it should be made clearer that no "Homeline" includes giving your existing genius VOIP line.

but then you would have to give up you home line (VOIP) as naked is no home line.
the standard home line option includes a home line it just happens to be VOIP. its really no different having a voip line to having a POTS line, you just have greater options with a VOIP line. they are both still home lines.

"All Orcon ADSL broadband plans do require you to have your landline and toll calling with

Orcon. Our standard package includes either an Orcon Genius phone line or traditional copper voice

line, and Genius Go (our iPhone and Android smartphone application that allow you to make and

receive calls from your home number on your mobile – pretty snazz"

From their T&C for ADSL

i don't see how its misleading or confusing. there is no mention of a phone line of either sort in the naked terms and conditions

i think you are trying to make something out of nothing

Naked does not mean a connection has no phone. It means a connection with no POTS attached.

Clothed DSL means it's a xDSL circuit provisioned with POTS.

Plenty of ISPs sell Naked connections with a phone delivered over VOIP.

Naked meant that before Genius came along. We are being as consistent as I think it is possible to be. Genius runs on a Naked broadband connection, that is the closest industry term. Genius then has voip on top. That doesn't mean every Naked connection now has voip service included.

If you ask anyone in the industry what type of connection Genius is, they have to answer "naked broadband".

At the end of the day this is all explained during the sales process before you sign up, by that stage you would be in no doubt what you are, and aren't getting.
