Hi guys,

Having issues with my connection to Twitch (as said in previous thread) and basically was told they are aware of the issue but it is only affecting certain versions of fritz's (mine being one of them). The only solution Snap offered was that they would notify me when they release new firmware which will hopefully resolve the issue, though there was no timeframe given. Signed up and got the fritzbox end of March last year, but it seems they aren't able to replace it (at least they didn't offer me that option) perhaps due to the nature of the issue. Still ridiculous seeing as I'm now stuck with half broken internet.

Not very happy obviously, and don't see the point in sticking with their fritzboxes if this is the only support they are able to offer to their official routers.

The popular choices seem to be ASUS or a combination of Draytek 130 + something else. Not really sure what to look for really. . Prefer to have an all in one if possible.

What have you guys got and can you recommend any reliable options for me?

Currently on the 100/20 UFB plan and possibly wanting 200/200 in the future.

The Draytek Vigor 130 is irrelevant to you. Thats a VDSL modem.

You can use any router which supports VLAN tagging on the WAN port.

Whether or not it works with Snap VOIP is another story however. Snap will only officially support the fritzbox for voice services.

The Fritz!Box is your only option if you're using VoIP.

I use the Linksys WRT1900AC running OpenWRT and don't have any problems on my 200/200 plan.

Myself - I use a Ubiquity Edge Router Lite. https://nicegear.co.nz/routers/ubiquiti-edgerouter-lite/ I don't use the Snap VOIP so that is no issue for me. And I use my fritzbox solely as a Wifi AP.

If you think you have "outgrown" typical consumer grade routers. Then go with the Edge Router or a Mikrotic Routerboard. If you need something that you just plug in and it works. Then don't get the Edge router or Mikrotic.

Any tips for the standard linksys firmware setup? Was planning on picking one of these up as we barely use the VoIP service but wanted the AC access point and was a big fan of the wrt54g in its day.

The standard Linksys software is a POS - I found that WiFi kept just "dropping" then see the whole router reboot.

Only buy one if you're wanting to mess around with it. I've found that OpenWRT is very stable and nice but it isn't the easiest to set up. There is some official OpenWRT builds for it now.

You mean Snap's VoIP. I'm using 2talk just fine on my Mikrotik+Gigaset.

im using a cheaper $100 Mikrotik and have my fritzbox doing the voip for my snap phone line.

works great no issues with speed or crashes, and it can do pretty much most of what high end routers do

I would be interested in just how you have that set up.  My fibre install is now finally scheduled for the 11th, and I will need VOIP for the phones, but I want to have my Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite as the main router and my Fritzbox 7390 just doing the VOIP.  Is that the sort of setup you have with your Mikrotik?  If so, how do you get the Fritzbox to do VOIP behind another router?

Did you get the Edge Router working on Snap? If you have problems I can give you a copy of my Edge router config.

Thanks for thinking about me.  My install has been plagued by delays, so it has not happened yet.

UFB was ordered in early December, and endless real or imagined problems have delayed it again and again.  So it should have come as no surprise to me that there would be a few more right at the end.  The 11th did not happen and it was rescheduled for the 19th (possibly due to the very bad weather at the time, but no-one bothered to inform me).  When the date was re-set for the 19th, they had someone come and dig at the bottom of the power pole that also takes the phone from the right-of-way duct into the house, and immediately they declared it rotten and put up a "Dangerous Pole - Do Not Climb" notice.  Why the many other Chorus/Downer people who have been on site before could not have done that simple check long ago escapes me.  One of them actually dug down at the bottom of the pole, for other reasons, and did not do the check at the same time!  Fortunately, I got really lucky and the excellent team at ScanPower had a gap in their schedule and had a new pole installed two days later, but by then Chorus had (quite unnecessarily) re-scheduled the job again to the 22nd.  The difference between ScanPower and Chorus is like night and day - ScanPower are a private company that seem to want repeat customers and believe in communicating with them, and in doing a good job as fast as possible.  Chorus is a bureaucratic monoply nightmare who have probably spent more money doing unnecessary paperwork about my install than I would ever believe, and they never bother to actually pick up the phone and call me if there is a problem.

At one point Chorus seem to have come to the belief that the duct that was put in under the right-of-way for telecoms was only 20 mm, due maybe to their having connected the old phone lines from the street to the duct using 20 mm pipe and then later when I asked for fibre having dug down to that duct rather than the real one (which is much deeper).  So after not mentioning that to me, they came up with a plan to take the fibre in along the ROW tin fence, and turned up one day without any notice and started actually doing that, despite never having gotten approval for doing it (which they were careful to do for the original plan).  They got duct installed along the fence to our property line, where it would have had to go onto our old concrete block fence, and then stopped.  Due to the fact that the concrete block fence is only held up by the jasmine growing over it - all the mortar is degraded and the blocks are shifting.  If they had spoken to me, I could have told them that idea was never going to work!  And that the real duct under the ROW is actually 50 mm - our neighbours (who put the duct in when they built their new house last year) had fortunately taken photos of the duct as it was being installed, and I was able to get Snap to send a copy to Chorus, and suddenly it was OK to use the duct for the fibre again.  I estimate that SNAFU caused around two months delay, and who knows how much cost to Chorus.

Today, I got a TXT from Downer saying that Chorus wanted to meet with me Fri PM "to discuss your fibre connection".  That did not sound very good, so I called Snap, who were very helpful as usual and called Chorus to see what was going on.  Chorus told them that it was such a long time since the job was originally scoped that they wanted to make sure the plan for the install would work, but if everything was OK they would then do the install at that time.  Since the plan is still (once again) the original one I made with the guy who came to scope it in December, I think there is actually a reasonable chance that I might have UFB on Friday after all.

As for getting my ERLite to work with fibre, I do not think I will have any problems with the basics.  I have had it running my network as the central router for quite some time and it already has all the firewall and NAT config in place - I should only have to make a few adjustments for the fibre.  I already found a Edge Router config someone posted for working with Snap.  I will probably have to remove most of my QoS setup as that should be unnecessary with 200/200 bandwidth available, and it makes the ERLite not use its hardware offloading capabilities, which might well make it too slow to handle 200/200.  The QoS has been really good with my ADSL connection - it has sped up all the web browsing dramatically even when I have the bandwidth maxed out with bittorrents (most of the time).

The big problem I face is that I do not want my FritzBox 7390 to be the edge router as it is not nearly as capable as the ERLite, so I have been experimenting with ways of getting the 7390 to work for VOIP while still being behind the ERLite.  I currently have it running attached to my spare ERLite via PPPoE on vlan 10, just as it would if attached to the ONT, and have been able to get basic VOIP stuff to work, but whether I can get it working well enough like that so that Snap can configure it using TR-069 without knowing it is not the edge router remains to be seen.  I certainly want to try it that way, but if necessary I can put it on the ONT for Snap to configure at first, then move it behind the ERLite later.  I have VOIP calls working outbound (to the real Internet), and registration of the VOIP app on my mobile works from outside my test network through the spare ERLite to the 7390.  But I have yet to try inbound calls and that is always where the problems occur with VOIP.  I will be working on that on Thursday.  And I do not have any TR-069 software to try to make sure Snap can use that through the ERLite.

If there is anyone out there who has been successful in running a FritzBox behind another router and still having Snap's VOIP (and TR-069) work, please let me know how you configured it - maybe offline (PM?) if you do not want to post about it?  I think my config may work, but it is always much better to be able to copy from someone who has it actually working.
