So I opened Windows live mail to check for new email and after it saying it had failed to respond for 60 seconds it started downloading a whole bunch of old emails from 2014 so now I have 108 emails that I've already seen, stored or deleted creating quite a few double ups for no apparent reason.... Did Orcon do something to the email system like reinstall an old back up from 2014 or something

Had the same thing the other night with Orcon and Outlook.

Are you using free or cheap pop email? If so you really need to upgrade your email to Office 365 email for Gmail for business if you want reliable stable emails.

Pop email is so 1995.

All you the need is a domain name and the ability to update the dns settings for that domain name. For the sake of $5-$6.10/month you can have reliable stable email.

Pop email is so 1995.

All you the need is a domain name and the ability to update the dns settings for that domain name. For the sake of $5-$6.10/month you can have reliable stable email.

As this is the first time in 9 years that anything like this has happened I would say my oh so 1995 POP email has been pretty well stable so um your answer is pretty redundant and really nothing at all to do with what happened I don't appreciate a sale pitch disguised as an answer

Or pay nothing and keep my free orcon for life email account.

That being said I'll switch when O365 let's me host a large number of accounts for that price. I'm buggered if I'm willing to pay per user per domain per month, I'd pay $5/domain per month thou.

Yeap nothing wrong with POP, has it limitations but it is generally rock solid. Both IMAP and POP have their strengths and weaknesses.

Windows live mail, and newer versions of outlook are set to automatically leave all messages on the server.
Your email client then keeps track of what messages it has already downloaded.

Obviously your email client has had some sort of a mixup and started downloading old messages again.
It is possible that something happened on the server side, but 99% of the time when I see this its either because they are using yahoo xtra, or its a client side issue: new pst file, or windows live automatically recovered data store.

Same thing happened with my Orcon email at about the same time as the OP. I'm using IMAP, keeping messages on the server. On previous occasions where a re-download of all messages happened it was usually because of some maintenance of the server.

My post may of been a little bit cheeky - sorry about that. Sure pop/imap is fine if you don't need to sync everything between multiple devices (send emails on one device and not another) and don't need to sync contacts and calendars.

Also if you prefer free well Pop/imap is fine.

I have had customers in the past that had pop emails and their laptop gets stolen or their hard drive crashes and all their emails disappear.

People don't tend to realize the value of that email data till it is gone.

Also I back up my emails on a regular basis to multiple places 2 external HDD's, one drive and google drive so I don't have problems if I ever loose it
