A bit of a sad month for Snap/2Degrees. Prime time speed drop is notably larger than last month, now often being beaten by orcon - and wow, spark is doing well.

Is the network a bit overburdened recently? Has anyone noticed a drop in speed?

My Snap/Degrees Vdsl seems 7-10mbs off Line speed at peak times since the merger.
Full line speed mornings and middle of the night.

If it does not improve will take a better option, for my 2 lines

Havent noticed it but if true, going from 13MB /s to 10MB/s is still not slow and most people on fast fibre connections wouldnt even notice the drop off.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

We are with MyRepublic in Christchurch on a 100/20 unlimited plan.
Up until late June our Speedtest.net results were 95/19.

Three weeks ago I saw someone working on the cabinet at the end of our street. Our speeds have been 105/21 at any time of the day since then.

So our speed has actually increased.

Chorus and all the LFC's now over dimension plans to compensate for L3 overhead. This was not the case with original UFB plans.

It sounds like MyRepublic probably had you dimensioned for 100/20 rather than correctly over dimensioning you. This wouldn't be related in any way to work in the cabinet as cabinets aren't active, so have no equipment in them.

VDSL still looks rock solid though; for once there's an advantage to still being stuck on copper :) ...sorta...  ok, not really, wish they'd hurry up and turn on the fibre on our street.

Was probably just another install in our street, but reminded me that I hadn't done a speed test for a couple of months.

"Chorus and all the LFC's now over dimension plans to compensate for L3 overhead."
Does this mean that they upped the speeds because they got sick of customers complaining that they couldn't get the speeds advertised?

By my understanding, yup pretty much :)

Well yes and no. Customers were getting the speeds they were supposed to get because UFB plan dimensioning was never at Layer 3. As virtually every ISP was (and many still are) only supplying FE capable routers for 100Mbps plans you can't get more than 93Mbps anyway, so in some ways the issue is a bit of a moot one. There was one of the LFC's that did overdimensioning from launch, all others and Chorus stuck to the CFH spec.

The changes by Chorus were introduced with their Accelerate plans, which also introduce contention into the UFB network and also offer better policing at the Chorus end.
