Quick question: If I root a Samsung phone and it trips the Knox counter, will 2degrees reject it when it comes to trade-up? The T&Cs just mention screen cracks and "good working condition".

I would say yes.
2degrees wants to re-sell it or send it back to samsung to become a refurb for 1-day/overseas

With the "trade up" thing you have to think of it more as renting a phone (a very costly way of upgrading as well).

So lets look at a iphone 6s 16gig and trade up

Phone is 1199 outright

2degrees lets you have it for $49 x 24 months (interest free)

You can trade up after 12 months if you pay $120 + $10 a month ($240 total)

$49 x 12 = $588
$120 + $120 = $240 + 588 = $828

So over 1 year you pay $828 dollars + return the phone (which on trademe would still sell for between 800 - 1000 for an iphone).

You then get the right to start your 24 month rental all over again with another phone to repeat the cycle in a year.

Now what a smart person will do is

Go to telco and get phone on 24 months interest free and pay your 12 months at $49
In a years time jump telco's and get a new phone, when you port your number this will trigger the remaining amount to be paid on your next invoice for your old phone from the old telco, sell phone on trademe and pay off the invoice.

End result = new phone + sold phone to cover the remaining 12 months to old telco.

The above works best with iphones as they hold their price a lot better than other phones

That will only work if you don't have a great plan you don't want to give up on the 'old' telco, otherwise you could end up being worse off paying more for your monthly charges. But I do get your point.

What happens if you damage/lose your phone so don't have an iphone 6 to tradeup from?

Do you get your $10 a month back?

But if it is anything like Spark I doubt it'll go through straight away - they'll probably check it. Then again if they're going to resell it I'm sure they'll just restore the original ROM and return it to the original factory settings.
