Hey guys,

 

 

 

I got connected with Orcon unlimited VDSL and landline this Thursday. My internet is working however my landline is not.

 

I had VDSL + Phoneline with Spark previously and everything worked great, we were just keen to try a new provider.

 

So far i am fully regretting that decision. The customer service rep said they had done everything they could, and that their level 2 support only works

 

Monday - Friday. I find it ridiculous they want me to wait 4 - 5 without a landline and they won't offer any sort of call divert service to my mobile.

 

For anyone thats curious, I have my phone plugged into my modem into line 1 as Orcon uses a VOIP service.

 

 

 

Anyone had any similar experiences ?

Probably didn't start the port process until the confirmation of service order completion given to them by Chorus - unfortunately because of how things work, if you port the line too early, you're going to end up with the whole connection being disconnected, which'll hold up the broadband reconnecting, or if you port the line too late, you'll lose the line or end up with a bit of down time (like you're experiencing now). I'd definitely chase them up to confirm they've done the port, as they should've been able to provide you with outgoing service pretty quickly (in my experience), with ingoing taking a bit longer to get to grips with. Worst case scenario, I'd expect a week between talking to someone to get things kicked off, and completion.

Yeah I probably should've done more research before joining them, because apparently i can't use my existing jack points.

 

Which is really really inconvenient.

There is nothing preventing you from using your existing jackpoints. Simply get somebody who knows about phone writing to integrate these for you.

Joutei, if its in any consolation everyone experiences the issues you face.  The reason is that there are two stages to your switch and stage 2 requires that stage 1 (not undertaken by Orcon) is known by Orcon to be completed.

 

The following is a summary I believe to be correct based on my experiences with a similar channge some years ago.

 

Your old 'landline' setup was descended from the Public Switched Telephone Network(PSTN) operated by Chorus now, but previously operated by Telecom and before that the Post Office.  Your VDSL internet connection was overlaid on the copper wire used to connect your house to the PSTN.  This meant that your phones now had to have a noise-reduction filter to enable voice communications to continue.

 

When you switch to the Orcon VOIP-based services then your copper wire is directly connected to Orcon.  Your PSTN connection disappears if you are switching to Orcon's VOIP-based service.  This is stage 1.  Stage 2 is that Orcon arranges for your 'landline' PSTN conection to be redirected to the Orcon VOIP service, which uses your internet connection to pipe voice communications to and from the phone plugged into the Orcon router.  Although Chorus own the copper wire to your house your service is entirely controlled by Orcon.  You are using 'naked broadband' with a landline-like service overlaid on it.

 

While there are ways that you can still use existing phone jacks around the house, the need for this can be mitigated by using cordless phones with the base plugged into the Orcon router like a phone, and the cordless units being able to roam your home.

 

From what you say, stage 1 is complete and stage 2 is not.

The existing jacks thing is a bit trickier than with Fiber, where you just axe the incoming from outside, and switch it all to feed from the closest jack to the ONT, and instead, you'll have to use an extra pair in the wires to pipe it from the jackpoint of the modem to the distribution point, and then back out to all the other jackpoints. Do-able, but fiddlier.

Thanks everyone for your replies !

 

To get a better understanding, I have made a quick schematic of the current setup.

 

Once stage 2 is complete by Orcon, would it be possible to connect my genius modem Line 1 (for Voice) directly to room 1's Phone jackpoint 

 

so that I would be able to distribute voice over my existing  jackpoints since its daisy chained across  ?

A master splitter doesn't isolate the voice from the modem, just the high frequencies that could interfere. Having the ATA connected could still cause issues, and there's no guarantee theres no exchange voltage coming in from the network. It's icky, much nicer to use the second pair of the wiring go setup a second circuit to allow the ATA to be used around the house. Consult a sparky or someone in the know to get it sorted.
Edit: oh right, my bad, kinda misinterpreted what you were saying. Yeah that'll work.
