When I signed up for a MyRepublic Gamer (i.e. 100/50) plan back in January 2015 they advertised it as being low latency. Their marketing is now a bit more specific: they say "We regularly monitor the network routes to major overseas game servers, ensuring low, consistent latency for popular games."

I used to occasionally look at my smokeping and send them trouble tickets when my first-hop ping times jumped up. To some extent I don't really care about an extra 10ms latency, just was annoyed that it existed with an ISP whose marketing said "low latency."

I've just switched to my new BFF ISP, Inspire Net. Latency to the first-hop IP in my MyRepublic traceroutes (i.e. their network core) has dropped. I.e. it takes packets less time to go through Inspire's network, across a peering exchange, to MyRepublic, than it took for packets to traverse MyRepublic's backhaul network. The ISP switch was on Saturday.

Right up there with their claims about heaps of bandwidth. Up there on the BS scale.

Too right.

Im on VDSL. About 4-6ms from my house to chorus handover. Then a 23-24ms hop to Sydney. So in Overwatch at the moment i am getting between 28 -> 33ms. Pretty happy so far.

Part of the issue may be that you are only looking at NZ links. Our MR panelists are spread throughout NZ and so latency tends to be a bit higher with MR becasue they do not appear to have much presence outside Auckland.

However, take a look at our page on NZ latency here - they are getting better, although not much good for Wellington; https://truenet.nz/nz-latency-april-2016

And in International latency here - they are one of the best, despite being a little average to Sydney; -https://truenet.nz/international-latency-april-2016

We try to compare with Singapore, their home territory here https://www.ida.gov.sg/applications/rbs/chart.html but MR seem to have been dropped from those stats and show as missing bars now.

There is that. But latency to overseas tends to be latency to Auckland plus latency to wherever else. If the latency to Auckland is a bit rubbish, you're going to have difficulty getting that back with slightly better routing to international destinations.

Looking at my smokepings, the ping time between my connection here in Whanganui, and MyRepublic's router in Auckland, has varied between 12ms and 27ms over the last year. That's the latency in their backhaul network. And that's a significant fraction of latency to Australia -- on my shiny new Inspire Net connection, ping time to Vultr's Sydney DC is 34ms, and it looks like the Auckland hop on that traceroute is 12ms away (via Palmerston North). At the worst point, MyRepublic's backhaul network was adding an extra 15ms just to get to Auckland. Not a hanging offense, but surprising from an ISP that advertises itself as providing low latency for gamers.

Yeah, I've been really impressed with them. I ended up being an open recursive DNS server by mistake -- my WAN interface name changed when I switched ISPs, and a firewall rule no longer applied to internet traffic. They rang me today. The person who rang me didn't treat me like an idiot, was clearly someone who knew what they were talking about, not a mindless first-level helpdesk script-reader. I'd already fixed the problem a day or two ago, but was glad that they called me up anyway.

They're decent, clued up people, and they don't have 50 layers of helpdesk and a long phone queue. I'm still amazed by this, and happy to pay a little bit extra for it.

Thought I could ask young Mr llama how you get those graphs and (hint) is it really, really easy to do ?

Also thought this was quite good from Whakatane (though it being Saturday morning maybe helps).

That uses rrdtool. Most of those graphing tools use MRTG or the likes
