Can someone justify a reason why you would need to give 30 days notice to terminate? When I can switch electricity providers at any time without notice. I pay an installation fee to join why the hell do I have to pay to leave?

Maybe the ISPs pay Chorus (or equivalent) in advance.

Assumet hey pay Chorus / etc monthly. Plus you signed a contract and those are their terms.

they do, but the charges are pro-rated if people leave mid-cycle.

30 day notice ISP's normally bill in arrears whilst LFC/Chorus charge in advance IIRC
So I change provider and they are also paying in advance for the same 30 day period of switch over? What a scam!
Ha, Note quite but it's really something you need a whiteboard with a calendar on it to map out
Well it is, how many people would know that outside of my contract for there silly modem (well outside of it) I would still get a sting in the tail, I switch providers unaware of some fine print obligation BS. Buyer beware I guess but still scummy though. My new provider doesn't engage in such shenanigans, and you can switch power companies like flicking a light bulb. Typical of a provider like them though and I am glad to have left them.

With the exception of those providers with no term contacts 30 days / 1 months notice is about as standard as you can get in the RSP world. While some don't do it it's safe to say it's not an exception, it is the norm.
Switching power companies and switching Internet providers has absolutely nothing in common so comparing the two is totally unfair - there are however electricity providers with 30 days notice in their contracts as well.
If only it was 30 days, I'm still getting invoices from Spark for Broadband that should have been cancelled in February! Sigh
