I'm considering moving to myrepublic for fibre. I've read the other threads on this forum on how the speeds are really bad but my friend down the road on myrepublic gets a consistent 100/20 even during peak hours (eg 6pm-9pm). (i live in auckland if that matters)

So my question is.. does anyone here live in auckland and get a good connection? :p (on myrepublic that is)

I was also going to ask if there was much difference between the residential plans and business plans (other than 5 bucks, a coupon and 80extra mbps upload) but then i realised they also don't get free installation *shrug*.

all i have to ask is why my repbulic? after reading those threads and see what issues they have you are still considring it i really have to wonder.

if its because of cost consider someone like bigpipe who are at the cheaper end of things and dont suffer any issues when it comes to speed

Was considering my republic because as I said, my friend down the road had no problem with it at all so I was wondering if all the problems with my republic were all nonauckland exclusive.
Also had a thought about bigpipe but we have some old home alarm system and I checked the 2talk faq and apparanatly they don't support alarm stuff

The old home alarm probably requires a copper landline.
If the alarm won't work on 2talk/UFB do you know that it will work on the myrepublic voip?
I would think that the alarm won't like that either.

Oh whoops haha, I'll get my dad to check with the guy that setup our home alarm if it's compatible with fibre or when he'll fix it up or w.e. As for bigpipe, aren't they just a smaller branch for spark?
I vaguely remember spark and 2degrees having something to do with 'integrated' wiring but I can't remember if that was just VDSL.

bigpipe is owned by spark digital ventures, but they are a completely separate company and share next to nothing in common with spark.

How is he testing that ? If he just looking at some stats from the connection, then yes, 100/20 24/7 is possible because thats what the line is - dosent mean the ISP has to be giving him 100/20 speeds though. The road may be capable of allowing speeds of 100kmph, but the limit is 50kmph.

Speed test/steam downloads etc. His connection is working fine for him. But if 2talk is compatible with my alarm I might go there instead. (Bigpipe)

Surely the appropriate Auckland metaphor is that the speed limit is 100Km/h, but it's rush hour...

Copied my post from another thread because it is relevant:

Just finished switching to Bigpipe from MyRepublic over the weekend and there is a huge improvement. 200/200 plan with both ISPs.

I always had good speed to Auckland and Sydney speedtest servers with MyRepublic but everywhere else was terrible. My usenet downloads have gone from 5MBps to 17MBps after the switch, speedtest servers in the US have gone from around 20mbps to well over 100mbps. Fast.com speedtest has gone from about 20mbps to about 140mbps. General streaming and browsing is noticeably faster.

The Bigpipe connection is literally 3 to 5 times faster than MyRepublic for all the locations that matter. MyRepublic really needs to sort out their international bandwidth issues. Highly recommend choosing another ISP.

Basically My Republic has massive contention on their international bandwidth, if you just run speedtests to Auckland servers it is going to look good, try to do anything useful and it will not give anywhere near what you are paying for.

Alarms and VoIP are a 98% solution. My advice is to simply not bother. If you want your alarm to work keep your copper, go with a proper IP solution, or a 3G module. Forget VoIP. The one exception to this would be Spark's VoIP solution over the ONT which is architected very differently.

Sounds good, still kinda mad that we got some potato alarm system, should have told the guy installing 'we have/want vdsl so you gotta make the alarm wireless' =]

Anywho thanks for the suggestions, looks like itll be sticking with spark or going bigpipe.

Also last question, is masterfilters only needed for adsl/copper phone wiring? I get really annoyed when my internet gets cut off when someone picks up the phone.

You will not need a filter with fibre.
