Just received:

New Zealand’s fibre expert, Orcon, was first to launch Gig plans in the main metropolitan areas last month, and is now continuing the rollout to 15 more cities and towns across the country.

From today, residents with a need for speed in Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Whanganui, Rotorua, Taupo, Gisborne, Nelson, Timaru, Oamaru, Masterton, Napier, New Plymouth, Whakatane, Queenstown and Invercargill can sign up to the new plans, starting from $135 a month. Included in the 24-month contract is an Xbox One S.

The initial uptake of Orcon’s residential Gig plans has exceeded expectations, with more than 50 percent of new fibre sign-ups choosing a Gig plan, according to Taryn Hamilton, Consumer General Manager.

“We have been staggered by the demand for Gig. Gig is the quickest and very best available, and we thought this would appeal to a select few, but we’ve been surprised by how many customers have traded up immediately.

“The plans are a massive leap from what most Kiwi homes have been used to, but if history has taught us anything it’s that technology moves quickly. In the short space of three years, we have moved from having an average of three devices in the home, to a staggering average of ten. In a few years, we could be looking back at fibre 100 plans with the nostalgia and mockery we now have for dial-up,” said Hamilton.

Chuckle...

100 fibre is nominally ~1800 times faster than really good dialup.

Gig fibre is (very nominally) ten times faster than 100 fibre.

I think it would be quite a few years before we mock fibre100 :-)

Don't be so sure of that, I already get annoyed if i'm using a connection slower than 30/10 it feels too slow, as time goes on 4k will become more common. Online video content will increase to fill that gap.

I doubt you could feel the difference between Fibre 100 and gig, even with a couple of UHD streams running simultaneously and still browsing on top of that. There would be a WAY bigger impact from an ISP doing smart things with CDNs and decentralising their BNGs than there would going from Fibre 100 to gig.

Cheers - N

RSP's must actually be very happy if they've got that uptake of Gigabit connections. Considering stats show no average increase in throughput or usage from 200/200 users and the vast majority of 100Mbps users it's actually allowing them (at present) to actually make money out of customers, something they're not normally accustomed to doing. It's interesting to see so many people willing to pay extra for something that won't benefit them in any way.

The price is the same as for 200/200.

Not mocking my 100/20 anytime soon! But, admittedly, this house is not a big bit consumer.

I know rite? :-)

Still, doesn't stop me getting TWO "top speed" fibre lines installed to my house. They're digging right now :-) One would almost think we're about to launch something :-)
