. . .

Any official updates for Orcon GeniusLite Black adsl modem?

My modem tells me I'm on "GeniusLite1424" firmware version.

But there is only one return on the entire world wide interwebs for that version is right here on Geekzone.

There is nothing about firmware, at all, on the Orcon site. Searching for "firmware" via Google site search return pages without any mention of firmware, indicating the term may instead be on webpage search tags.

Feeling a little raunchy by this stage, I flipped the modem over.

The backside said "Designed by iNet Labs Australia" - no entity online by that name.

However, I found a link on "iinet" to a modem with the exact same online interface and outward appearance, here:

http://iihelp.iinet.net.au/sites/iihelp.iinet.net.au/files/BoB%20Lite%20Manual%20Final%20Sep%2027%20(web).pdf

In the manual section dealing with firmware, it contains reference to:

.. " 3. Click on the link to the Router Firmware page on the iiNet Support website."

No such link exists on the Orcon router firmware update page. Just the advice to upload an update from the computer, but no link or reference where to download that update from.

Another issue: I have tried to change from WPK to WPA2 but it proffers four blank boxes to enter numbers 0-255 and the numbers I've tried don't work.

Oh, and Chrome shows the wifi link with the modem to be insecure.

Got screengrabs if that helps.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

BoB Lite is now a ~7 yr old device that hasn't been supplied by Orcon for probably 3 1/2 - 4 years now. It wouldn't surprise if no firmware exists that is any newer.

BoB units were mainly distributed by iiNet in AU years ago, Orcon got them with a tweaked firmware etc for their network. They run Busybox at their core, so if you're into a bit of "hacking" you can probably tweak some things yourself ;)

Presumably if you sign a 12 month contract they will rent you one of their current modems.

You must be on naked ADSL or unbundled voice? I thought they migrated everyone off the old 'Genius' VoIP stack. 'Genius Lite' is the one without the built-in handset right?

. . .

Quite so.

Strange, tho, how Australia manages to keep firmware and manuals online, seven years old or no, but New Zealand doesn't.

Firmware was all managed by TR-069 on Orcon so a device would always be up to date. There is no need to make firmware available online.

I'd also pick the number of Genius or Genius Lite routers in use would be very minimal as Orcon swapped the all of these these out for voice customers when they moved to the NF4V years ago.

From what I can tell, yeah.

GeniusLite is the black box which looks (from a quick look) identical to the one in the PDF I listed above, and which @xpd confirms are the same.

Sidenote: not my own modem, just trying to do a bit of maintenance for a mate.

Yeah I know what it is. They used the Bob (Genius) and Bob Lite (Genius Lite) for customers who had voice and those who didn't. As most customers at that time had a voice service provided with their plan there were only ever minimal numbers of the Genius Lite ever in the wild.

As they're now very old and lacking on features you'd be better off upgrading. If you don't want to resign you could pick something up off Trademe for $20 that'd be far superior.

Thanks xpd, and I did have a look around but I am but an old hack, of the newspaper type, not the far more useful tech type.

Had a look at this, for example, and thought, ah, nah, way above my paygrade:

Any firmware downloads for the Orcon units I got, I obtained from one of their sites, games.orcon.net.nz - but not there anymore. http://games.orcon.net.nz/index.php?page=files
