The Static IP for my 2degrees connection has its location set as Wellington which makes some content default to Wellington instead of Auckland (slightly annoying), is there a way to get this updated?

I have the same issue, but my static IP says I'm in Nelson. Guessing that's who previously had the IP address I have, but Apple gets a bit paranoid with 2FA alerting me someone in Nelson is logging into your iCloud account but you're in Auckland.

The only upside is it's great for geolocation testing. But a way to update it would be great - I thought after 9 months of having a static IP some geolocation database somewhere would update itself automatically, but no.

I've had the same static IP in Whakatane since 2013/14, yet things still default to Auckland. It doesn't seem to auto-update.

What do you mean by "content defaults to Wellington"? You mean companies and advertising using geo lookup services? It won't affect any services or CDN content your RSP provides.

IP addresses don't have locations tied to them and many RSP's may use the same IP address across large portions of the country, or even anywhere in the country. Some analytics providers may try and tie these to a geo location but this will never be 100% accurate as they're not actually asking providers to tie IP addresses to a location, nor is there any process for providers to provide this information to geo based service analytics providers.

My static IP ends up in lots of different locations in NZ depending on which geolocation service gets used. My guess is that those Geolocation service providers just scrape BGP routes. And then try to assign physical locations to all of the routers that are announcing routes via BGP. But since 2degress use PPPoE connections, and have a single pool of IP that they use for static IPs. External providers can't see where those PPPoE connections go to on their way to end customers.

In saying that, Google probably have more accurate IP geolocation data. As your Android phone will be able to get GPS coordinates while connected to WIFI. So Google can link those coordinates to your public IP address. And also cross reference to their map of WiFi SSIDs, MAC addresses, and locations.

I was surprised to find that Maxmind GEO IP knows exactly where I am. And I am not in a big city.

Been used to my 2degrees static IP-address showing as Christchurch for the longest time.

That one puts me in Auckland (wrong) with a "accuracy radius" of 200 km (also wrong).

- for me it's mainly Google searches that keep defaulting to Wellington results from location unaware devices (e.g. if I don't share my location and my media box) and some apps (e.g. Speedtest)

I don't have a static IP, but I do have a sticky IP. I've had the same IP from Slingshot for at least 18 months.
Maxmind have my town correct, and the location coordinates are scarily close as well.

but do services like Maxmind GEO IP get access to this "collected location data" to update their GEO IP databases? And if so who else does?

Unsure.

There are plenty of public databases though that have similar information -WiGLE for example has wardriving data and a huge SSID database.

Slightly off topic, but has anyone ever had this issue with the Vodafone Sure signal things? A mate did and it drove him nuts.
