Hi,

So I got upgraded to Fibre recently which was working well at base speed, speedtest.net was giving me 104Mbps down / 21Mbps up. I wanted faster though so I put in a request to get the speed boost to 900/400, the change was reported as done.

However checking speed after the speed boost was applied, Now I'm getting 92Mbps down / 385Mbps up. Given that I seem to be getting max speed for the upload but download is still at around 100Mbps I'm thinking that it sounds like my connection still has the original download speed limit set?

I've tried power cycling the ONT (with no change) and tried a different router. The second router I tried isn't fast enough to handle full gig but given it gave me 92Mbps down / 150Mbps up it still looks to me like the upload is being limited by something other than the router else I'd have expected something like like 150Mbps down as well.

Just wanted to make sure there is nothing else that could be wrong my end before taking this back up with 2degrees.

Thanks

There is a rate limiter thing in the Fritzbox (assuming thats the router you have). its under Internet > Account Information (from memory).

Also, what model Fritz do they use these days? I think the 7490 can do Gigabit, but the smaller ones like a 7430 would struggle immensely.

oh, and testing over ethernet cable? Not Wifi right?

I had a similar experience with fibre - I was getting up to 50Mbps down on a 200Mbps plan.

My ISP repeatedly insisted the connection was correctly provisioned from their end.  After three phone calls and being told three times that the problem was at our end ... I gave up and downgraded to a 100Mbps plan.

No changes at our end but download speed increased to 100Mbps.

How recently did you change? Sometimes it can take a day or two after the fibre is re-provisioned for higher speeds before the QOS (speed limiting) at the 2degrees end to be updated.

Any opinions are my own and do not represent those of 2degrees

Setting the ports to 'green mode' Changes them to 100mbit burst. And it can't work out when to go 1Gbps :D

And yep, as above need to make sure the throughput value for upstream and downstream is 999999 or it applies built in QoS (defined in the chart when it breaks up video/streaming/data)

Part of setup outline here http://blog.gowifi.co.nz/2016/03/how-to-setup-fritzbox-for-fibre-internet.html

Flick a PM to @2degreesCare with your account details (address, customer number, name) and that can be investigated.

Sounds like the speed profile hasn't been changed or got reset for some reason.

Thanks for the reply, I'm not using a fritzbox.

The main router I'm using is a opnsense install running on a quad 1ghz cpu board (https://nicegear.nz/product/pc-engines-apu-3a4) which as far as I've researched should be well able to handle gigabit. I'm not aware of any qos limits being applied in it. Given I'm a little new at opnsense I wasn't 100% sure I hadn't missed a setting, that was why I tried the second alternative router.

The second router I tried is running openwrt/lede on a tplink TL-WR1043ND - my research suggests there is a hardware limitation in the v1 model I have that stops it being able to handle full gigabit but it should still be able to run slightly faster than 100Mbps and given that it gets 150Mbps for upload vs the 98Mbps for download it does suggest to me that the download rate isn't hitting the hardware limit (unless there is some reason why the hardware would be able to manage a faster upload rate than download?)

Yes I'm testing on a gigabit ethernet connection, no Wifi being used.

I have same issue with Spark. When it was provisioned (March 2018) I got 950Mb download. Now it is less than 200 (wired connection). Actually it is faster on wifi. They asked Chorus to check, Chorus said nothing wrong. Spark is sending me a replacement router. Fingers crossed. What else may be wrong?

Right, would have thought a quad core board like that was well capable too!

Not doing anything insanely intensive on your firewall? Thinking along the lines of UTM type stuff.

If not, then yea, get your ISP to check your profile has been set properly - could also be their BNG not having the right profile after an upgrade, not just Chorus/LFC.

Not doing anything intensive currently, at the times of testing the router had basically just been setup and has fairly minimal extra firewall rules. - I've only just started with opnsense so I've not enabled any of the advanced features such as intrusion detection etc yet.

Certainly is sounding like it's at the ISP end, so will be waiting to see what 2degrees finds their end.

How have you configured your PPPOE username? It should be username@snap.net.nz If it is simply username, the PPPOE still connects but profile changes don't apply properly.

Had this happen to me when I upgraded from 100/50 to 200/200. ended up with 100/200 instead. Helpdesk were able to easily set the correct profile speed.

There was also a thread ages ago with a similar problem, and it turned out to be something to do with Chorus.

If you know anyone else who also has 2deg gigabit fibre. Ask if you can try connecting at their house but using your account. (remember to disconnect your PPPOE session at home first). And doing some speed tests that way. This would prove wether the problem is Chorus or 2deg fault.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'd not considered that option but I can confirm that I'm using the correct username@snap.net.nz for the PPPOE connection

For the reference of anybody else reading the ticket 2degrees has been in contact with me and have adjusted the QOS (Speed Limiting) for my connection and I'm getting faster speeds now. I'm just clarifying a few final points on what happened with them before writing up a final summary for this thread as to what happened.

That QOS in the fritzbox is a massive catcher on this issue..
