It seems 2d-Vocus traffic might be going via Christchurch (I'm guessing based on the pings), at least from my line in Auckland:

traceroute to orcon.net.nz (60.234.0.19), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
1 R7000 (192.168.1.1) 0.297 ms 0.646 ms 0.634 ms
2 * * *
3 default-rdns.vocus.co.nz (101.98.5.137) 18.898 ms 19.163 ms 19.257 ms
4 default-rdns.vocus.co.nz (101.98.5.136) 19.243 ms 19.149 ms 19.142 ms
5 10.101.5.127 (10.101.5.127) 31.542 ms 31.528 ms 31.467 ms
6 10.101.5.126 (10.101.5.126) 31.427 ms 30.804 ms 30.857 ms
7 default-rdns.vocus.co.nz (60.234.0.19) 30.971 ms 31.020 ms 30.781 ms

Seems odd for traffic that in the past has stayed within Auckland is taking a bit of a scenic route.

Has any one else noticed this behaviour?

We have a direct bilateral peering with Vocus in Christchurch. Prefixes on direct bilateral peerings have a higher local preference than those learned from peers on Public Internet Exchange points. We are also learning prefixes from Auckland but they are from Internet Exchange points so they are less preferred compared to the direct peering in Christchurch.

This is with one of engineering teams for investigation/comment. I'll update once I receive recommendations/feedback etc.

Nick.

I am seeing the same on 2D UFB

Tracing route to orcon.net.nz [60.234.0.19] over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 172.50.3.1
2 * * *
3 19 ms 20 ms 20 ms default-rdns.vocus.co.nz [101.98.5.137]
4 21 ms 20 ms 20 ms default-rdns.vocus.co.nz [101.98.5.136]
5 32 ms 34 ms 34 ms 10.101.5.127
6 33 ms 34 ms 34 ms 10.101.5.126
7 34 ms 31 ms 34 ms default-rdns.vocus.co.nz [60.234.0.19]

ISP's that don't demand ridiculous money to peer are awesome.

Update - QA approved with local preferences changed, we have a request into Vocus NOC to build a new Bi-lat, I will update once this is done.

Correct, waiting on Vocus to implement requested change. I'll update once completed.
