Anyone else using 2Degrees to pay for Google Play Music subscription?

Been using it since the family subscription was made available here in NZ (and 2D carrier billing), and has worked well. Last month, however, I got an email from Google that said payment was declined. In trying to sort this out with 2Degrees via FB Messenger, which is the only place where I got a useful response from (call and email got nowhere), I have:

  1. Removed 2Degrees as a payment option and re-added it
  2. Changed my SIM card
  3. Re-added 2Degrees as a payment option

And I am still unable to select 2Degrees as a payment option for Play Music. Funny enough, it's acceptable for Play Store purchases, but I can't even select it for Play Music.

What infuriates me is that this has been working for some time. All of a sudden, it doesn't and no one seems to know why.

To the best of my knowledge no policy decision on the 2degrees side to forbid subscriptions via Carrier Billing, and there is nothing special in the interface between us and the payment aggregator that indicates a payment is for a subscription vs. a regular purchase so I wouldn't be able to reject it at my end even if I wanted to. My vote would be that Google have decided to deny it for some reason.

iPad Pro 11" + iPhone 15 Pro Max + 2degrees 4tw!

These comments are my own and do not represent the opinions of 2degrees.

Thanks for your reply.

I initially thought it was a change on 2Degrees' end, as the email I received from Google had the subject "Payment declined for Google Play Music family plan subscription".

Google has not replied to my query on their Help forum, so I don't know what to make of it. I just find it weird that it's allowed for app purchases and not for subscriptions, as long as they're both getting paid.

Hi @Nitro, I'll get back to your thread on Facebook as it contains the info but I can't see any issues on our end.

Have you checked that it wasn't declined due to you reaching your spend control limit?

That happened to me once. And I had to wait for Google to retry the payment a day or so later. As the Google payment system doesn't have an option to retry payment. It just blocks the carrier billing option if a payment decline happens with it.

Yeah... Been through the checklist. Nothing came up as a reason for payment to be declined.
