I've had exactly the same thing happen. My downstream rate has dropped from 20Mbits to 12Mbit as well and the upstream from 1.1mbit to 508K. My signal to noise ratio is about 18db so its not likely to be a bad line. Just guessing I think Orcon are capping the max sync rates to try and spread the available bandwidth.

Edit: Prob not capping as it appears coinsiental with other issues :(

Have you contacted their customer support to have your line tested?

Also has your SNR ratio changed? (as wonderferret has mentioned)

Curiously my lowered sync rates are exactly the same as yours i.e. 12285k and 508k.

haha, I have to log another fault too... Cry

...my parents keep getting a recorded voice announement when trying to ring my line.

It seems like the Orcon+ phone system gets so overloaded at times, and it denys them...
-my mum and dad get so pissy coz they have to call me on my mobs, LOL

I have to do an isolation test, unplug my phone and filter.
then do these tests:

Hi XXX,

Thank you for your call regarding your connection speed.

There are several reasons that your speed may be affected, the most likely of these being congestion at your local telephone exchange. We may be able to investigate this with our supplier on your behalf, and find out if there is any way we can increase your speed.

In order for us to investigate this further, or to troubleshoot your connection, please provide the following information:

•For 3 speed test results
* --- tracert 60.234.1.1
* --- tracert www.orcon.net.nz
* --- tracert www.google.com
* --- ping -n 10 60.234.1.1
* --- ping -n 10 -l 500 60.234.1.1

The call centre agent threatens the $80 callout fee for a tech, if they find nothing wrong with my line
I'm like: 'can we cancel this call please' ... 'I'm 99.99% sure my line is fine...some else on geekzone has the exact same problem

The call centre always gets you to agree to the callout charge. So far I've never had them come out to my place as the faults are all in the exchange.
Also I have the same problem as you. i.e. inbound calls are going straight to voicemail.

Coinsidences as follows

Both AK Central.
Both have fast DSL sync speeds drop to the same rate.
Both on Orcon + plans
Both have issues with inbound calls.

Hi guys,

Interesting guess - but we are not intentionally capping sync rates.

We have identified a problen with our equipment (partly thanks to you pointing this out - thanks guys!) that is causing those users with high sync rates - higher than 15Mbps or so to have a drop in sync rate (to around 13Mbps). This has been escalated with our equipment vendor and is being treated as an urgent fault.

Apologies for any inconvienience that this causes while we wait for the fix.

did you uprade the firmware on your DSLAMs or something?
I'm using a Dynalink RTA1025W, which uses a Broadcom BCM6348 chipset...if that helps with anything

Update: We expect a patch to be ready to fix this issue next week (subject to passing testing etc). Will update as I know more.
