Hi folks.

Ive been with Flip for many years the worst thing with them has been they use CGNAT which means you get kicked out of logged in status on some self-verifying pages eg cpanel and so on.

However, their service has been great but unfortunately, they have changed from the most competitive provider to not so much, as fibre has become much more competitive in last 6 months returning cheaper prices than adsl in some cases.

So those of you who are using Orcon appreciate a heads up as to how youve found their service before I make the leap to satisfy my bandwidth hungry daughters.

I believe Orcon do not use CGNAT which will help me with my web work but Im more concerned about the reliability of their bandwidth.

Their prices are cheap, and I would not expect superb support for the price, but more concerned about the quality of networking.

Thanks kindly,

Alistair.

they are fine, i have been with them 7 months and in that time i have had about 1 hour of down time in 7 months. The speed does tend to drop off during peak times but that is relative on a Gigabit connection and i still have enough speed that 4 adults can still stream and game without  noticing any drop. The accounts side of Orcon is still awful and you need to keep on top of your bills etc as they often get things wrong.

Thanks for that also in the mix is MyRepublic. Doing a google there are no direct comparisons of the 2 ISP that I can find.

Anyone comment?

Been with Orcon fibre nearly seven years and the 100/20 speed I am on is absolutely fine.

Haven't had to use CS for a long while but they were quick to answer. Also, support here on GZ as well.

Can recommend.

I am with Orcon. I am on their "gig" plan. In the time I have been with them I have not had any issues and there speed has been consistent.

No issues here, consistent speeds.

My opinion is if your hardware is setup correctly you shouldn’t have any issues with any ISP. The issues that arise are due to inadequate or incorrectly setup hardware on the users end most times. Of course you need to factor in customer service and support which varies across each ISP, that’s the part you want to consider when choosing oh and price.

been with them over 10 years, don't plan on changing

There local and international speeds have always been good, never experienced any congestion with them

if you go with Orcon then go through the broadband price link at top of page and follow the questions and then you should get the $49.95 deal from Orcon for 6 months for the Gig plan.

Excellent replies thanks.

Just one other thought came to mind; I need a landline, and dont like VOIP due to its quality. POTS is what I have and need. Flips $10/month phone is POTS and comes with everything includes national calling. Orcon is $15 does anyone know if it is VOIP or POTS? If VOIP the whole thing should be $5/month IMHO.

Can you still get POTS with a Fiber hookup anyway?

@ageorge Nothing wrong with VoIP it's superior to POTS  if it's setup correct (carrier grade) you will not notice any difference

Over the 7-8 years I have been with Orcon we have only had 2 problems (1 being no internet for 7 weeks), the no internet problem was chorus fault and Orcon did there best to help.

Every couple of years I ask what they can do for being a loyal customer and always get a couple of free months so very accommodating.

I'm going to noob myself past judgement

When truenet was running, i believe orcon was one of the best ISP's for ping times. Their bandwidth through the day was pretty good too.

2degrees was good too.

Spark/skinny pings were lower that the other ISP's. Maybe this is because of their odd peering architecture? I don't know.

Unfortunately the commerce commission decommissioned truenet without ensuring an in-place working alternative. So now consumers have no way of comparing ISP's.

There is something on the way, but , they have been working on it for over a year now with no useful data .

https://www.nbr.co.nz/article/truenet-loses-comcom-broadband-testing-contract-ck-p-211959

If they ever get it working, should be a useful comparison tool .

Well, Flip, Orcon, Slingshot are all ultimately the same network, same company. Flip has its own BNG's (unless @sounddude has finally nuked them) but the access and upstream networks are all shared. Policies and billing certainly still differs between the brands though. Flip's very much the poor cousin of Orcon/Slingshot internally within Vocus group however.

Agreed I have a VOIP connection on vfone cable and find the audio quality is far superior to POTS.
