Hi,

I just switched over to 2degrees - on a gigabit fiber connection.

Plugged in the fritzbox 7490.

Speed tests were great - 920/500 on the wired desktop, 200+ on the laptop wireless.

Only thing that wouldn't connect was the raspberry pi 3b (running a NAS / openmediavault) connected by ethernet - it just couldn't get an internet connection whatever I tried.

Apart from the raspberry pi thing everything seemed fast and stable, wifi range was good.

But then as I connected everything else and more people arrived home and the connected devices started getting up towards 20, the wifi started becoming very unstable, dropouts on multiple devices etc.

I really liked the fritzbox, but after I couldn't get the raspberry pi to get a connection and then the unstable wifi , I thought I'd try my old router instead (D-Link DIR-882).

Once I was running through the D-link again the wifi went back to being stable again and the raspberry pi connected again, however the speed test on the desktop was only 250/250.

I updated the D-Link firmware and the new setup wizard auto-detected my provider as 2-degrees and seemed to already know all the correct settings from what I could see, everything is working, just the speed being a bit low is the only issue.

Sooo, my questions -

1.   Am I right in assuming that the issue with the fritzbox wifi becoming unstable was a too many connections thing ?  is anyone successfully running say 20+ wifi connections on it ?

2.   Anyone using a raspberry pi 3b with the fritzbox 7490?  any ideas why it couldn't get an internet connection ?

3.   Any ideas on why the D-link is only getting 250/250 speeds compared to the 920/500 on the fritzbox ?

Thanks !

@jnc77 The fritzbox 7490 is a superior bit of kit compared to the D-Link and have you updated the Fritzbox to 7.11?

Yeah it does seem like a better router overall and I hope I can use it, but I fear my excessive # devices may stop me from using it, as the d-link does handle that very well.

I didnt try upgrading it no, good idea, thanks.

In the update 7.11 it does contain Wi-Fi fixes

Edit: change log

I’m running a network for work via a Fritz!Box for the devs to use outside of the corporate network. Has on average 80 wireless devices connected and doesn’t break a sweat.

As for your raspberry pi ensure it is set to dhcp as the IP range on the Fritz is different out of the box. Just statically assign an IP via the fritz itself.

Out of curiousity I looked at their change log.

They get a thumbs up for useful info - normally you just see a comment like "stability fixes" and that's it.

Oh nice, that's sounds promising then, thanks, just to clarify - it is a fritz!box 7490 ?

Will look into the raspberry pi stuff, i'm pretty shore it was on dhcp, but it wasnt even registering a connection (no light on the network cable) so I couldnt assign an IP to it.

Yes - Fritz!Box 7490. Got 2 of them doing Mesh via Ethernet to 2 different areas of the office however this simply means one is handling all the load really. Each Fritz can have 60-80 devices connected depending on where the testers decide to sit during the day.

If no link light try another Ethernet cable + ensure you haven't got power saving turned on the ports (enable power mode): (Home Network/Network Settings/Lan Speed)

Give 2degrees a call. Their support is pretty good and wait times are usually minimal.

I'm quite surprised by that! Admittedly I haven't used a fritzbox since the 7390, the router itself was fine, but the wireless was terrible.

OP - if it was me, I would start with a a new dedicated access point - Amplifi, Unifi, Grandstream etc
