More and more often I’m getting slow YouTube where videos will fail to load at full quality and will take a while to load anything at all.

I’m in a Gigabit plan and this happens via Ethernet and Wi-Fin I’ve tried changing my DNS off 2D to something else but the problem remains.

Has anyone had a similar issue?

All devices (computers and phones/tablets)? If computers only, all browsers? Tried different browsers? Incognito? No browser extensions? Using adblockers on your network?

I don't think we have enough information to guess what could be going on, if not happening to other 2Degrees customers.

There's a massive investment in Google/youtube caches on the 2d network, suspect it maybe something more localised, there would be alot more noise if it was affecting a larger population of customers.

That ended up being specific to LG TV which was fixed via firmware. No issues with Netflix since then.

I'm using the usual Firtzbox 7490 router, and have Cat 6 cabelling via a Unifi Switch & patch panel. Unifi Switch reports 1GBps for all the ports I'm using, so im confident my network is fine as speedtests hit expected speeds.

To be clear this isn't every video, but sometimes I hit a video which seems not to be cached and the speed to buffer those ones is really bad. I think it's probably pulling from a US DC in those cases, but it's slower than I'd expect 🤔.

If no one else is experiencing this then I'll do some more debugging on my end and post back.

Thanks

This is something I am noticing too. Firefox, 2degrees UFB, Wellington.

I've been attempting to diagnose but this occurs across all my devices. Requests to https://i.ytimg.com are stupidly slow (you can see images loading on the homepage). Doesn't matter what browser I use.

Same thing as you OP?

Can't send the details now, but I've been noticing the same for months now. Didn't find anything widespread on Google, so I assumed it was just me.

IPv4 or IPv6, 2D DNS, Google DNS, Cloudflare DNS, same behaviour in all devices (Samsung TV, Sony TV with Android, Chromecast, Chrome, Safari, Firefox)...

Most videos will default to 1080p or even 480p, and some videos will suffer with buffering every few seconds if I choose 2160p. Speedtest in parallel  from the same device gives ~200Mbps over WiFi and ~800Mbps over ethernet...

Good to know I am not going crazy... 😅

FWIW I have not experienced any issues with YouTube or any other streaming service.

I am in West Auckland and on 2D Giga fibre.

Streaming 4k from YouTube, Netflix, Amazon etc on multiple devices simultaneously (IOS, Windows, Android etc.), both wired and wireless has worked without fault or hitch for our household.

I noticed a one-off issue last night around 11:30pm when Youtube videos were stuttering and auto-selected quality was down to 144p. Gave up and went to sleep. Been fine when I tested today though - and I haven't had any other issues, so may or may not related

To add to this. It isn’t just YouTube slow, it is also Google Maps and especially street view.

Now that you mention it, yes... Maps is also affected... I noticed that a while ago but didn't connect with the Youtube issue...

I've had the same exact issue with Buffering on Youtube and Google Maps being very slow to respond. I have since moved onto a Static IP (to stop remote RDP sessions dropping) and it hasn't really been much of a problem since.
