Is anyone getting decent broadband speeds from Orcon in Grey Lynn? I live on Old Mill Rd. My connection has dropped in the last month from 7000 down to around 2400 down.  It's not my wiring because I tried connecting directly to the street connection and it was the same.

Anyone else in Grey Lynn having this problem or are you connecting at a decent rate?

I don't know if this Brown's Bay cabinetization thing is also something that has happened here and if this is the reason?

Sounds to me like a cabinet has been installed between you and the exchange, or a line fault.

log a fault with the Helpdesk and we will see what we can do.

Here's how I understand the problem.

If you're on Orcon or Vodafone equipment in the exchange and your area gets a cabinet your line has to be patched through from the cabinet to the exchange instead of terminated on the telecom wholesale adsl equipment in the cabinet .  So instead of getting the expected 10Mbit sync speed from the shorter distance to the cabinet you actually get a worse sync rate that you used to get before the cabinet was installed.  Apparently this is due to interfence from patching through the connection to the exchange.

There used to be a orcon blog post with infomation about getting in touch with Orcon if your area gets a cabinet and your performance drops, apparently they would change to back to an Orcon non + plan and thus your connection would be provided over the Telecom wholesale equipment in the cabinet, woo 10Mbit sync party time.

Interestingly I can't find this blog post on there website anymore, was it removed?  Are they still willing to switch people back to non +, I don't know.

There is space in the cabinets for non Telecom equipment but the politics of installing it (known as sub loop unbundling) has not be resolved yet.  ETA is ?? it was supposed to be sorted last year and wasn't.

Orcon and Vodafone investment in exchange equipment seems to have come to a grinding halt due to the combination of the financial crisis, Telecom's cabinetisation programme and the goverments FTTH plans.

Anyway your options are get in touch with the help desk and find out what they can do about your performance loss due to your area getting cabinet.  If they can't or won't do anything you can either wait for sub loop unbundling to be sorted (eta ??) or change to an ISP providing their service over Telecom wholesale equipment.

There is definitely space inside these cabinets for other provider's equipment (under the already installed multiplexing equip).  How much would depend on what kind of cabinet it is, and how many people it serves, and yeah I'm guessing the politics of getting your equipment into one etc is still in the air.

You want to include the www, or the page loads oddly with itself in a frame..

Followup on this issue:  Support call to Orcon got the Chorus guys to put some new equipment in the cabinet down the street and we are now connecting at 19,000 down (was 2000).   Tongue out
