I am currently with Xnet VFX which has an Urban and Rural rate set by the Commerce Commision.  After 2 years with them they decided to change my plan from Urban to Rural costing me $20 a month more. Now i am thinking of joining Slingshot nDSL to save $ but will Slingshot do the Urban/Rural thing in the future?

The Commerce Commission set pricing for ULL & Naked ADSL circuits. Because their exist (apparently) a large number of customers in New Zealand that are deemed to be unprofitable (largely in rural areas), pricing was set differently for both rural and metropolitan customers and this is based upon the exchange you are connected to.

There is roughly a $20 difference between the cost of a circuit in a urban area vs a metropolitan area and most ISP's incl Xnet, Snap etc who offer naked ADSL pass this cost on. It appears at present that Slingshot do not make any mention of this differentiation and are not presumably losing money on some customers who sign up.

If you are deemed rural then its cheaper to get a pstn line and never use it then to pay the extra costs - the naked dsl pricing was a total cockup by the commission - IMO it should be way cheaper since there is no need for paying for a port off telecoms large dinosaur exchanges.

No naked dsl on the red or purple networks either which I guess just goes to show how little the pots ports really cost.
