Has 2 Degrees given any idea as to when Dunedin may be covered by their own cellular network? What about other areas?

Does a rough "roadmap" exist?

It shouldnt really affect you in any way that im aware of because apparantly when you are out of their areas it will roam on vodafone sites at no extra cost providing you have vodafone service

It affects me directly due to lack of EDGE on Vodafone's network, but besides that wasn't the question.

Is there a roadmap for extension of 2 degrees services available and where would Dunedin feature?

I'd say if 2 degrees did super well in dunedin then they would look into putting their own sites in to save on roaming costs, be a case of supplying where there is the most demand.

I'd imagine if 2Degrees make their pricing low enough, they will get most students in dunedin switching over. It won't take long for 2Degrees to build their own sites in order to stop paying Vodafone roaming charges.

I think we all underestimate the power of the termination charge.

While students are always out for a great deal, if the prices are only a little cheaper (which I suspect will be the case), then this needs to be weighed up against losing contact with friends that may be reluctant to send off-net TXTs which are charged additionally to their existing TXT packages.

Yes I'm being dire, but it is a valid point nonetheless.

Hurry up and launch already!

I don't beleive 2Degrees has setup a new network in order to be only slightly cheap than VF and TNZ, if they want market share they must commit to low prices, their business case is usuless otherwise. Price is the only thing low cost users care about.
for me anyway I only have about 2-3 really close friends I'd want super low cost calling to, it wouldn't take much to convinve them to switch especally if the costs were half.

I don't know how closely you have been following this but termination charges in NZ are criminal.

For every "off-net" TXT or call (that is - a call made from 2 Degrees to any other mobile network), a quite significant cost is paid by 2 Degrees to the other network, which limits the discount that can be made by 2 Degrees.

You also forget that 2 Degrees have spent millions of dollars, and need to turn a profit to please their shareholders.

I am predicting a per minute flat rate of about 79c/min, which undercuts VF and Telecom by 10c, at launch.

I would be (pleasantly) suprised to see it much less.

I hope you work for 2 degrees. Termination charges mean little room for 2 degrees to move and still turn a profit. And don't forget VF roaming charges too.

Remember 2 Degrees are not here to save us from high mobile prices. They are here to turn a profit, and I'm not blaming them for that.

Their ads will have been misleading and a waste of time if they only go down 10 cents. I'm quite confident calls will be less than that.

Swinging right back on topic, I haven't heard when 2deg are building in Dunedin, despite having asked their PMs and engineers quite a lot (admittedly not for a while - I've been a tad busy with another customer).

I know they are building/have built two sites in Queenstown, that's a very lucrative market.

I agree with langi27, there's 20,000 students in Dunedin, most short of money (apart from the Dorkland BPs), all with cellphones looking for a good deal.

I accept that students are looking for a good deal, but at the end of the day these on-net packages combined with high termination rates are going to make it tough for 2 degrees.

I'm considering a move to XT so had to buy an old CDMA phone on special *just in case* I did move to XT (waiting for 2 degrees pricing first) due to on-net advantages to communicate with my significant other.

Queenstown makes sense - international tourists will see a cheapy SIM card and it will be "insta-buy" compared to $30 offerings from the other networks.

Agree with you there. $30 dollars for a SIM on Vodafone or XT compared to $2 or $20 on 2degrees. Thats where I think that 2degrees will win!
