Hi.

On TV this week, 2D stated (loosly) that their coverage was better than the others as it would use the other networks if necessary.

Does anybody know for sure if this is correct? Will a 2D phone use another network if the 2D network is not present? Will it use both Vodafone and XT networks? Is this feature transparent to the user and would the user know?

Also, if this is true, will phones on the Vodafone and XT networks also utilise each other's, or 2D's network if necessary?

A phone with a 2d SIM will use the Vodafone GSM network if you are outside a 2d coverage area. It will not use Telecom's CDMA or WCDMA networks.

Vodafone and Telecom SIMs will only use their respective networks.

No they wont use the XT network they do not having a roaming agreement with them. I know when using some phones if your out of coverage on say XT but theres still Vodafone coverage in the area you can use the phone just to dial emergency.

Not XT no - for starters, the technology is quite different. Plus 2d don't have a roaming agreement with XT. They do have a roaming agreement with Vodafone though. In areas other than Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown your 2d phone will roam onto Vodafone's network (but you wouldn't really know it or see any real difference)

The 2D statement is wrong, I get worse coverage in East Auckland because uninformed public is delaying towers from going up. Last night at a friend the signal was very intermittent where as with VF it was stable.

You can never have enough Volvos!

OK, so have 2D only actually installed network in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown? So their coverage maps include coverage of the VF network?

Queenstown, from your guys experience do they actually have towers there? They deny it in the contact centre anyway...

Yes coverage maps do include that which is actually Vodafone roaming. Kinda misleading in some ways as it's not strictly 2degrees' coverage, but then again, you're still 'on-net' as far as 2degrees is concerned.

As for Queenstown, I couldn't say for sure as I don't live there. But I have seen it bandied about quite a bit. I guess if the call centre says no, then they probably don't have towers there.

I've been taking my VF mobile with me and also a mobile with 2degrees. Havent noticed any coverage differences between the two thus far.. ie: both Vodafone and 2degrees both dropped off 'No Network' about 5 mins from Staglands in upper hutt :)
