I play World of warcraft, the connection was fine until the past 2 weeks that it starts to become unplayable. Extremely high ping and lots of disconnections from the servers during a raid or even just if theres some amount of other players moving around me. I am on Orcon + network and i have been on ADSL for a long time and have been playing online game ever since(never encounter such problem even with the old 512kb adsl). So i got curious and did some speed test for overseas and local site.

yes this is some what stupid for an adsl2 connection..

I find it curious that people often report poor international performance on Orcon as having begun a couple of weeks ago... when really, it has been consistently mediocre since the start of 2009. Usually the complaints centre around Youtube or WoW, which leads me to think that Orcon's network engineers have been trying (somewhat clumsily) to manage traffic specifically for those applications, but every so often, e.g. during school holidays (like the past two weeks), the congestion (and hence packetloss) gets so bad that it's just so much lipstick on a pig. Meanwhile, those who simply seek consistently good throughput have given up complaining and/or have switched to another ISP.

kvunqad, if you want consistently good performance, Orcon is not for you. Indeed if you take a broader historical view, no one ISP is THE one for you. The moral of the story is that you have to be prepared to switch ISPs regularly (though not so regularly as to break any contracts, if you choose wisely) in order to get acceptable performance. What you are experiencing now is not some blip in performance that will be swiftly rectified by Orcon, never to rear its ugly head again... it is endemic to and characteristic of Orcon in 2009 (and probably 2010 if they keep pretending there's nothing wrong).

Really, now is the best time to switch. Unless Orcon has a decent international bandwidth upgrade in the pipeline (unlike the many so called 'upgrades' they've done this year), the summer holiday season is going to put a serious strain on their bandwidth pool, and you don't want to be grumbling into your leftover pavlova while you read their 'remorseful' protestations that they could not possibly have predicted the level of bandwidth demand.

I'd agree that 2009 has been pretty average in terms of international performance, but at the same time I too have noticed a dramatic slowdown in the last couple weeks, getting very similar results as kvunqad regardless of the time of day or night.

Nevermind, this week our house is changing back to Telecom so looking forward to that.

One less Orcon customer so hopefully your speeds will increase slightly with one less person trying to get a slice of that bandwidth!

Maybe less time and money spent on finding Iggy a new band and more on what customers want from an ISP may help.

yes its ridiculous, I called them (orcon tech support) asked them (noticed its "them" cause i made more than one call) if there's any known issues with the net, and they just said no everything is fine blah blah blah and starts to blame my equipment etc.. none of the people from the support admit that theres some fault or they are throttling bandwidth that used to be fine for a long time... I dunno if this is US i will probably sue their arse right now

What are your physical connection stats from the router? Looking at your ping of 119ms for a local connection it looks very high so maybe there is something wrong with your physical line.

Keep in mind that speedtest.net often reports 2 x the actual latency, so it's probably more like 59 ms (at most). That's suggestive of high attenuation (and probably interleaving), so the 2.7 Mbps local speedtest result seems likely. The real issue is the comparatively poor international result, which one assumes to be the usual Orcon congestion + the school holidays effect. The latter should theoretically clear up as of tomorrow.

You should be able to get your sync rate to the Auckland site.

If you can't, then there is something wrong with your setup/line/exchange.

You have a 3.8mbit sync rate. That would explain the 2.6mbit to the Auckland speedtest. (3.8 - PPP/PPPoE/IP overheads etc would = the 3mbit mark).

Is that your usual sync rate?

I am usually on the 5mbit mark but it dropped to 4mb ish after I restart my router, and stuck at that sync rate.. assuming my profile got changed or something.

However its rather funny I am getting a better speed connecting to sydney at the moment and lower ping too

Seeing you have a connection which has a pretty low connection rate you might want to try a number of thing to get your connection speed up.

Orcon will suggest quite a number of things.. but doing stuff like removing all phones/devices from your jacks and then restarting the router and seeing if it makes any difference. Changing the jack your router is connected to to see if it makes any difference, removing the filter (with no phones connected) etc. Or you could just be a long way from the exchange or a copper line fault from the exchange -> your house.

After you have reported the fault they will be able to have look.

yes, they suggest me all those things whenever I call them and I have to tell them everytime that I have a splitter or a dedicated jet point(found it funny they couldnt look it up). I removed everything and replugged the router after 5mins or so.. All I get was a slight drop on my sync rate.
