Hi,

If you have a 2degrees phone will/can it pick up the time automatically from the phone network? (like Telecom's network) or is it like Vodafone where you seem to have to set it yourself?

Actually - does anyone know why Vodafone's (maybe 2degrees) network doesnt set the time on your phone? Is it just that someone was too lazy to read the big "cellphones networks for dummies" book and enable the feature on the network or is there some other really good reason that I cant even begin to imagine why its not set?

Yes - phone will pickup time from 2degrees network (tho not when you are roaming on Vodafone).
Don't know why Vodafone have never enabled this :(

It's actually a feature that very few networks anywhere in the world use. Vodafone aren't alone.

Only one timezone in New Zealand and phones really take care of it these days

Although having the phone adjust to local time shortly after touchdown when traveling can be quite helpful. (Although frustrating if you are not expecting it!)

It used to do it, but not any more.

I have nokia 1100s which need to be reset when the battery is removed which is a PITA.

I would like it back on please :) I can think of no reason not to offer it.

I'd love to see Voda enable this. When I travel in the US, which I do regularly, the time simply gets set correctly. I'd like to be able to land in AKL and have the time set. Don't see what harm it can do, it can be disabled if the user doesn't want it for any reason.

I cant think of any good reason why the network shouldnt set the time - as someone else pointed out its not like we have different timezones. Though I'm not sure how "phones really take care of it these days" - Maybe you mean that they take care of it themselves by getting the owner to key it in?

Maybe Vodafone might enable it if they can think of a way for charging for it - like calls to their call centre ;-)

I know that this is the 2d forum, but...

Has Telecom implemented this? My XT phone (SE W705a) doesn't automatically set the time when I've had the battery out (my old CDMA Nokia did). However, when I went to the US and roamed on AT&T, it pulled down the local time. When I returned to NZ, it changed back to NZ time. It also automatically updated when daylight saving started. But if I remove the battery again, I once again lose the time.

It would appear that it sets the time *zone*, but not the *time*.

Edit: It's doing it now. I wonder whether there was some sort of outage when I first got the phone (or maybe my SIM wasn't fully activated; I vaguely recall briefly having issues). It's working now though :)

Yes this function works on XT. Some handsets have this option turned off out of the box tho.

My 2D fone never changed at daylite savings. My Telecom CDMA and XT did, Vodafone didn't.

phones take care of DST if you have a decent handset if not read the hand book

The other advantage though is it setting the correct time, rather than just time zone / DST etc. As the network (VDFN) doesn't do it, I've loaded a time sync program on my phone instead.

At the risk of answering a VF question in this forum...I understand the reason they don't do it is a) the only one time zone thing mentioned above and b) it costs 100's of thousands to license that functionality on their network.

My source also thought that the licensing for network features has to get re-purchased for every upgrade...*ouch* No wonder the other operators use Huawei networks.

Don't know about you, but I don't want to pay for that functionality and the customer always ends up with the bill no matter how you dress it up.

I don't see that as a good reason for no auto time update as Telecom does it at no extra cost to the customer..
