I've been trying to disconnect from Orcon for a little while now.  You would have thought this a fairly easy task.

Back in early Oct I set a date for disconnection of 26th Oct.  Orcon duely raised an order for Chorus to disconnect me.  Did Chorus do it - NO.

So after a few days I rang Orcon and told them I was still connected.  They checked their logs and Chorus had sent a confirmation on the disconnect back to them.  How bizarre.

So we set another disconnect date - 2nd Nov.  Well the date came and went and same story.  Chorus confirmed to Orcon that they had disconnected, but here I am online.

The praise: Orcon aren't charging me for the additional internet connection days and have been pretty helpful.
The dissing: NZ is still at the ransom of a single entity, Chorus, that can't get it right.

All this so I can just get on a cabinet!

Is this an isolated case, or are we seeing wider Chorus performance issue?

If you go to www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps and throw your details in there, are you actually on a cabinet?

if you are, then Orcon can put you on that cabinet. We don't want LLU going via a cabinet as it causes havoic with the conneciton speeds

if you are not on a cabinet, then even snap or another isp can't help either. (Correct me if I am wrong!)

@Sounddude: thanks for your reply.

There is a cabinet 50m from me which the other ISPs (Snap/Telecom/Maxnet) say I can get put on.

if you are, then Orcon can put you on that cabinet.

I've repeatedly asked the Orcon help desk if I can get put on this cabinet and I've been told NO every time.

The answer has been: "Not until Orcon put their equipment in the cabinet" - to which there is no ETA (I've asked that too).

If you work for Orcon, I am happy to share my login name so that you can see all my correspondences regarding this.  It has been most frustrating.

I understand why Orcon don't want to go via the cabinet (which has already happened to me).  Read my previous post: A cabinet stole my bandwidth...

The other ISPs say that I can get put on the closest cabinet (most likely this one). But I need to fully *disconnect* from the Mt Albert exchange (where I am connected to Orcon), then initiate a new connection order which will drive Chorus to connect me to the cabinet (as opposed to reconnecting me from the exchange.)

Hofefully if you disconnect and then reconnect you won't loose your port and then become a port waiter.

Typically getting someone moved from a exchange to cabinet or the other way around takes some good reasoning before chorus will do that, it typically involved account managers getting involved and a huge paper trail so don't expect that it will happy, ie, feel very lucky if it does :)

It seems weird that you've got that response from Orcon regarding cabinetization. If the telecomwholesale site does confirm that you're running through a cabinet and you tell Orcon that your speed is being affected since being put through the cabinet then they're more than happy to connect you up via telecom wholesale DSL.

I was in a similar situation, a cabinet was put in about 100m away and reduced my Orcon+ connection from 4Mbit/s to 1Mbit/s. I rang Orcon and they said not a problem and in a couple of weeks connected me to the wholesale product. Now I get 20Mbit/s down and 1Mbit/s up. No complain of product!

@Noodles - I asked specifically for this arrangement (wholesale) via email and phone and got denied. I wonder if they have changed their policy?

Cookernz, when did you last ask? We have been converting people from LLU to wholesale as required.

Are you 100% sure your existing line is connected to the cabinet then back to the exchange?

or does your line go directly to the exchange, but you want to try and get your copper moved to the cabinet?

@Sounddude - I got my written response from Orcon on the 4th October saying I couldn't be moved to Naked DSL wholesale.

I can't be 100% sure that my existing line is connected to the exchange or cabinet. All I have been told is that I was connected to the exchange and that when the cabinet went in, it affected my speed. (~8MBit down to ~2MBit).

This would suggest that my copper now goes to the cabinet and then back to the exchange. (But I am a little uneducated on this).

The telecom wholesale map shows me smack in the middle of the local cabinet zone.

Ah Naked DSL, that changes everything.

yea we can't do naked DSL on wholesale. We can only do Wholesale services with a phone line attached.

if you are ok with signing up for a phoneline also, we can get you moved to the cabinet.

@Sounddude - right that explains it. Which leads me back to getting disconnected by Chorus. he he. :)

How come your competitors (SNAP/Maxnet) do Naked DSL wholesale but Orcon can't/won't? It seems odd. The only reason I ask is that I don't actually want to leave Orcon, but these circumstances are forcing me to leave.
