Hi there, Im currently a Telecom customer on Big time plan.

Looking at joining Snap. What are the speeds like in Auckland and ping times for gaming? Torrents etc.

I used to get over 1mbps off peak downloads with big time. Now that its managed during off peak hours thats dropped to around 200kbps for me.

Would appreciate any feedback on Snap service.

I wouldn't. I swapped from Snap to Xtra because of poor peak times, plus they are packet shaping torrents.

read the Snap forum here and notice the few number of complaints compared to other isp's which is a good sign, been with them over a year and i am still happy, pings to game servers are from 240 to 340 anytime youtube , downloads and torrents are pretty constant all the time , if not i just reset my modem a couple of times and the speeds are back. There main activity is business/corporate connections around Canterbury ,the university the big client, so they they dont market resisdential like other isp's so they are not overscribed which is good for there speeds, i would never change

What kind of speeds were you getting on torrents? and was it more problematic at any particular time of the day?

10-15Kbps all day - I ended up turning off the speed limiter as Snap was doing it for me :/

I'm torrenting Ubuntu Karmic right now on snap - getting ~250KB/s. I don't think nate's experience is typical.

What would be the average speed range for torrents on Snap Pro plan? Do they manage the traffic? peak off peak etc

if the seeders are high then there is not much difference for me peak or off peak, my torrents will go as fast as my connection allows around 400kb during the day , at 8.00pm that may drop to 340kb but to download a 350 mb file at 6.00 pm takes me on average 30 minutes but i have never had one as low as nate's

It appears they are shaping traffic (or doing something else strange). Also doing odd things with the speedtest.net site.

I can do a speedtest.net test to Sydney and get 15Mbit/s, but if I try to do a SSH or HTTP transfer from our server there I get a maximum of 100K/s (800kbit/s). And no, it's not the server, as I can transfer from the same server to another server in AKL at 2.5M/s (20Mbit/s).

Traffic to our servers in the US and EU are much the same, struggling to get over 50K/s (400kbit/s).

General traffic to youtube.com etc. is slow also. Interestingly torrents aren't as badly effected as using more TCP connections appears to give us more speed to a certain point.

Snap are aware of this and have said that there is no ETA for a fix. We are currently waiting for a churn away from them.

Again, I wouldn't recommend Snap if you need International bandwidth. We can get 18mbit/900kbit speeds to local servers so it's not a local loop or exchange backhaul issue.

Hmm thats interesting. I made a very clear question to customer service asking if they shape P2P and torrents. The CSR said clearly they do not. Hope its something they will fix

It may not be shaping (it would be pretty odd shaping if it was anyway). But, it is an issue that has been ongoing for around 3 months that Snap are aware of and aren't fixing.

Thankfully we've only got a day or so left :)

We're now on a Telecom Business Broadband connection. Speedtest.net shows a slower speed than when we were on Snap but now we can actually achieve the speed that it reports.

Getting about 5Mbit/s down from the US east coast which is about 15-20 times faster than we have been getting with Snap for the last 3 months.

Where speedtest.net would show a 8-9Mbit/s download from the US we would only really achieve 250kbit/s. I guess it goes to show why Snap are placed well on the ISP list at speedtest.net
