Hello,

I have a naked dsl connection from Orcon with the sx763 rented modem.
I had a big dissapointment when I got this message while trying to configure the SIP client:

End users are not authorized to create or modify VOIP accounts.

Please contact your operator if you want to subscribe to this service.

Do I need an external ATA to use a SIP provider or is there a workaround to activate the built in SIP client?

Thanks.

There's no way for YOU to activate it, but you can call Orcon and ask them to push configuration to allow you to use the feature. They're pretty decent about it if you ask nicely.

Orcon will enable this for their own VoIP service if you contact them.

I know they initially would not let users configure their own VoIP settings with another provider. I have no idea if this is still the case or not.

I wanted actually to use 2talk but I'll send them an email to see what they can do.

Thanks for your help.

I also use a pap2t with 2talk and works great. I think they may not let you configure a 3rd pary voip/phone provider on the rented device.

I think you can get the pap2t for $50-$100 and can let you actually have two phone lines on two phones if you wanted

I don't know that they have that restriction any more. My own SX763 has all the VoIP settings enabled (including creating accounts).

It's a modem that I received last week. The official answer was that they don't offer the VoIP service for residential customers. Well, tough luck but it is stupid if you ask me.

If you are a "power user" and you know what SIP is and how to use it, they should let you do it.

I guess you could argue that if your a power user you would be using your own "higher end" router than the chepo provided by the isp.

I had an issue when i was with italk, I followed there instructions which then locked me out of my pap2t and they wouldnt give me the admin password.

Falconz, the router that Orcon provides is not cheapo. The Gigaset SX763 (not available at retail at all in NZ) is a pretty decent piece of kit, as opposed to the RTA1330 or whatever it is they give you on cheaper residential plans.
