Hi all,
I have been having a rediculous amount of problems with my what is meant to be an ADSL2+ connection. A couple of months ago we noticed that our phone and internet would go 'funny' (phone via 2talk) at 3.15pm almost every day of the week inc weekends without skipping a beat. Sometimes the internet would re sync pretty quickly, other times it would take up to 2hrs to sort itself out. The most likely thing that came to mind was ripple control (to turn the hot water cylinders etc on/off).
After toying with 2 Dlink 502Ts (1x Gen I, 1x Gen II) and a new Dynalink RTA1320 (all with latest firmwares), numerous isolation tests, checking what home wiring I could, we decided to get the central splitter installed to isolate all the possibilities (suprisingly the 502T would sync faster than the RTA1320).
The techie came round, did his install and we tested the line to make sure it worked. Seemed ok with the Dlink, which connected just approx 5.6Mbit (was less than that before the splitter installation). So I was a bit pleased with myself, but told the techie that it wasn't stellar performance. He pulled out his Speedtouch ST536 and this connected about 6Mbit - so ball park what the Dlink was getting.
Day 1 after the splitter install the 502T stayed synced for just shy of 24hrs, flew through the known time problem at 3.15pm without a hitch. But after that it started to go horribly wrong again, where randomly the connection would buckle - not at 3.15pm but whenever it felt like it! Sometimes the connection would stay up for 18hrs, sometimes 5 mins. Thinking it was the 502T's fault, I gave the RTA another bite - alas, it still synced slower than the Dlinks AND it still had random disconnections.
Jumped on Trademe and grabbed a new Speedtouch ST536 v6 to add to the mix. Initally it looked great - syncd at just over 6Mbit but when I checked it a few minutes later, the connection had dropped to 1.5Mbit and then lower again.
Sigh....
Now for figures: distances - I looked at the telecom wholesale website and our local exchange / cabinet thing is getting upgraded at the end of this year, I noted the code they had for it and then while driving on the main road noticed how close the cabinet is - approx 750m.
ADSL stats from the router (RTA1320)
Line Mode ADSL2+
Line State Show Time
Line Power State L0
Line Up Time 00:06:33:40
Line Coding Trellis On
Line Up Count 7
Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 1927 Kbps 890 Kbps
Attainable Line Rate 3368 Kbps 883 Kbps
Noise Margin 20.4 dB 13.9 dB
Line Attenuation 42.5 dB 22.8 dB
Output Power 17.5 dBm 12.4 dBm
Funny that the line rate (up) is higher than the attainable line rate....
Adivce? Should I log a line fault? Or have I gotten really unlucky with where we've moved to? Anything else I can try? Thanks for reading my rant!
