Yo,

I'm connected to the St Helliers Exchange in Aucks.

I'm generally happy with Orcon, but sadly, they can't give me a naked DSL service.  Apparently its a Telecom exchange and the technology (i'm guessing thats sales talk for 'politics') doesn't allow Orcon to provide a naked DSL service off this exchange.

I'm tempting to try the Remuera exchange somehow, but seeing as it's 10km away, I can't imagine my connection would be very good :(.

I'm on hold with SNAP, who I'm guessing will give me the same story.


Anybody know how I can get a naked DSL service off a Telecom exchange?

Slingshot have a NakedDSL service. You can call them on
0800 89 2448 or 0800 89 2ooo

You can yes. The ISP's can just wholesale it through telecom/chorus. I guess Orcon choose not to and will only do it in exchanges where they have their own gear.

I suspect what he's really trying to say is he wants to be unbundled but Orcon don't have gear in the exchange his connected to.

I believe Orcon are not being very honest with their customers when it comes to Naked DSL - they only offer it if they can serve you from their equipment via LLU, however if you are on Telecom equipment they claim it is 'incompatible' with Naked DSL.

When they should really be saying "we choose not to offer this as a service via Telecom Wholesale equipment", rather than blaming Telecom.

Orcon do not sell "Naked DSL". They sell "Orcon+ Network". They are not being dishonest or misleading.

There are many services availble from Telecom Wholesale that they choose not to sell.

Ok, so SNAP said they didn't see any reason why they could do it, so I think you're right.

Orcon CAN, but DONT offer naked DSL on Exchanges where they don't own the gear.


I'm a big fan of Orcon, but i'll change ISP if I can save $30 a month and get Naked DSL without loosing my solid bandwidth / connections.


I guess I'll wade through the forums to try and figure out who the best ISP is.

The SNAP guy told me thier international bandwidth was really under subscribed, but he would say that.  He also told me i'd be stuck with a 12 month contract...


Any thoughts?



Edit: Orcon DO sell naked DSL on both thier plus network, and standard. St Helliers is also stated as being inside the plus network.

In my particular case I was getting Orcon+ (naked) for 9 months or so, when the cabinet went in and my sync rate dropped to 0.5mbit, I had to move back to a Telecom Wholesale service.  It was at this point that Orcon claimed Naked DSL was "not compatible" with Telecom's equipment.

I still believe this is dishonest, or misleading at best.  Given I am receiving Naked DSL from Maxnet across the same supposedly "incompatible" equipment.

I have no problem with Orcon offering or not offering any services as they see fit, but they should be upfront about the reason.

Well you didn't say that at the start did you!

Orcon+ may not be compatible with Telecom's cabinets (or more likely they just can't make it work economically).

Orcon have messed up how they have handled the impact of cabinet deployment on customers.

You're still mixing up your terminology though.

Orcon+ is a DSL service delivered from Orcon equipment in a Telecom Exchange.
Maxnet Pure DSL is a Telecom Wholesale service being resold by Maxnet.

These are two completely different services.  It's like saying Slingshot Mobile is the same as Telecom XT.

Normal sites and services (eg: gaming servers) are only routed to the filter for checking if they share the same hosting servers aka ip addresses as sites on the blacklist

Basically performance of regular traffic is not affected at all.

I find these kind of comments rather funny as the DIA filter has not been on all this time when people think it has. It was on for about 1 week a month after it was first announced and has again been turned on as of last week now that it's actually ready (not sure about the other ISPs who were using it)

And seriously, if you have a problem with wanting to look at young girls or animal porn then perhaps you should be with another ISP, hopefully one that offers counselling along with their services.

if you have a problem with gaming or browsing then log a ticket with the helpdesk as that is not the standard maxnet experience, it should be virtually flawless.
